Rivian allows drivers to choose between three battery sizes—105 kWh, 135 kWh, and 180 kWh—in its R1T model and two sizes—105 kWh and 135 kWh—in its R1S model. With that battery lineup, the Rivian line has a projected range of 260 to 400 miles.

How big is a Rivian battery?
Rivian’s line of electric vehicles includes the R1T electric pickup truck and the R1S electric SUV. Additionally, Rivian has partnered with Amazon to build an electric delivery van.
As of 2022, Rivian has begun delivering R1Ts to customers, while the R1S and the delivery van are still in development.
When it comes to battery size, Rivian provides a few impressive options. For the R1T model, you can choose between the standard pack (105 kWh), the large pack (135 kWh), and the max pack (180 kWh). The R1S model is available with two battery pack options: the standard (105 kWh) and the large pack (135 kWh).
You can improve the range of the R1T by mounting additional batteries in the bed.
Rivian Battery, range, and charging specs
Rivian’s battery pack lineup offers an impressive driving range.
For the R1T, the standard pack has an EPA projected range of 260+ miles, the large pack has a projected range of 314 miles, and the max pack has an estimated range of 400+ miles. The R1S is available with the standard pack or the large pack, which provide an EPA estimated range of 260+ miles and 316 miles, respectively.
Note that these are only estimates: your real-world results may vary. And considering that these cars are not yet widely available, it’s especially crucial to take these estimates with a grain of salt and be prepared for some slight discrepancies.
If you own an R1T, you can extend the driving range further by mounting extra batteries in the bed. You can charge those extra batteries by connecting them to another R1T if no charging station is available.
Rivian has the ambitious goal of developing an extensive network of charging stations across the U.S. and Canada. Like its competitor, Tesla, Rivian plans to construct a mix of fast charging and slower destination charging stations while also offering at-home chargers for customers to purchase.
The company intends to build a network of 600 Rivian-exclusive Adventure Network sites which will include 3,500 DC fast chargers. The initial charging speed for these sites will be 200 kW before the company gradually bumps that up to 300 kW.
Additionally, Rivian plans to build 10,000 destination charging sites—known as Rivian Waypoints—at dining, retail, and lodging locations, as well as national parks and other destinations across the U.S. and Canada. The Rivian Waypoint locations will be accessible for any electric vehicle with a J1772 connector and will be level two (11.5 kW) charging stations.
