You should change the oil in your Porsche Cayenne every 7,500 to 10,000 miles using synthetic oil. The most popular synthetic oils for this model have a viscosity of OW-30, OW-40, 5W-30, 5W-40, or 10W-30.
Engine oil is essential to your car’s performance. It keeps your car running smoothly by cycling throughout the engine, keeping its components clean and lubricated. One of the best ways you can prolong the life of your car is to change the oil regularly using the right type of oil.
While an oil change is a fairly simple procedure, it’s crucial to make sure it’s being done correctly. How often you need to change the oil and the type of oil needed depends on the make, model, and mileage of your vehicle.

How often does a Porsche Cayenne need an oil change?

The oil should be changed every 7,5000 to 10,000 miles.
That’s assuming that your Cayenne takes synthetic oil. The majority of vehicles today use synthetic oil as it lasts longer and boasts better engine protection than conventional oil.

What kind of oil does a Porsche Cayenne need?

The API (American Petroleum Institute) recommends using synthetic oil with a viscosity of OW-30, OW-40, 5W-30, 5W-40, or 10W-30. Check your owner’s manual to be sure that you’re using the oil with the appropriate viscosity.
Engine oil with a viscosity of zero is the least dense, which helps it remain thin and flow through the engine easily—especially in cold temperatures. In fact, the “W” in the oil stands for winter. The lower the number before the “W” is, the less viscous (dense) the oil will get when exposed to low temperatures.

How much does an oil change cost for a Porsche Cayenne?

The cost of changing the oil on a Porsche Cayenne is determined by whether you take your car to an auto shop or change the oil yourself.

Professional cost

If you have your oil changed by a professional mechanic and your Porsche Cayenne is between the years 2003 and 2022, you can expect to pay between $276 and $295.

DIY cost

Those who are comfortable popping the hood and changing the oil on their own can save a lot of money. If you're using
0W-30 synthetic oil
, a quart will run you about $9.99. A 5-quart bottle will cost you between $20 and $30.

How to change the oil in a Porsche Cayenne yourself

Here’s what you’ll need in order to change the oil and oil filter on your own:
  • 7 quarts of synthetic oil (engine oil capacity is 6.7 liters)
  • Engine oil filter
  • Oil drain plug and washer
  • Rubber o-rings
  • 36mm oil filter cap socket
  • ¼ inch drive click torque wrench (for oil drain plug)
  • 18mm combination wrench
  • Metric hex bit socket set (2mm-14mm)
  • Oil drain pans
  • Low profile vehicle ramps (pair with 2.2-ton capacity)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety glasses

1. Warm up the engine

Drive the car for about five minutes before you get to work. The oil drains more easily when the engine is warm.

2. Raise the front of the car

If your Cayenne is equipped with
air suspension
, you won’t need to manually raise the vehicle. Otherwise, you'll need to raise your car with jack stands and vehicle ramps and secure it in place. For safety, the vehicle must remain still while you work.

3. Remove the oil trays

Put on those gloves and safety goggles! The oil trays are fastened to the vehicle’s underbody by Torx screws and several bolts—you’ll need to loosen them to take the oil trays out. The panel covering the mid-section of the underbody will also need to be removed.

4. Drain the dirty engine oil

Place the drain pan underneath the drain plug and remove the plug with an 18mm socket wrench. The engine oil should drain for about 15 minutes.

5. Remove the filter

As the oil drains, locate the oil filter underneath the engine—it’s in front of the oil drain plug. Remove the drain plug of the oil filter, letting it drain for about a minute. Then remove the oil filter housing with a 36mm socket and a ratchet.

6. Replace the oil filter

Reinstall the oil filter drain plug, making sure to also replace its o-ring and torque it to 7.5 ft-lbs. Remove the engine oil filter and place a new o-ring on the oil filter cap (a new o-ring should come in the package with the new oil filter). Insert the new oil filter in the filter housing cap.
The oil filter cap should have a small amount of fresh oil added to it—this will lubricate your engine when you start it up again. The o-ring seal on the oil filter cap will also need to have a light coat of oil. Reinstall the new oil filter and filter cap, torquing it to 19 ft-lbs.

7. Reinstall the oil drain plug

Once the dirty oil has drained, a new oil drain plug and washer can be screwed in. The new washer keeps the oil from leaking. Torque the drain plug to 22 ft-lbs.

8. Add the new engine oil

The engine’s capacity is 6.7 liters—add oil little by little until topped off, making sure there is no oil leaking under the vehicle.

9. Reinstall the underbody panel and check the oil level

After the panels are back in place, lower the car and turn the engine on. Take the car for a short drive.
A screen beside the odometer indicates the minimum and maximum oil levels. With the car still running, use the right-side steering wheel switch to navigate to the screen’s “vehicle” page and select “oil level.” Add more oil if needed to get to the maximum level.

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Porsche Cayenne?

Driving more than 10,000 miles without changing your oil can result in serious engine damage. After 10,000 miles, the once clear-brown oil turns into black sludge and can cause the following problems:
  • Overheating
  • Engine corrosion
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Total engine failure
