Across model years 2015-2022, a gas-powered Nissan Altima’s battery size will be either a 35 or H5 group size, depending on its model year. You may be able to substitute a Group 26R or Group 47 battery, but when possible, install the OEM battery. A 2007-2011 Altima with a hybrid engine will take a 245 V nickel-metal hydride battery.
Edmunds has called the Altima “one of those competent and capable family sedans.” Most Altima owners find them to be reliable and comfortable to drive. They’re great cars!
If you already own an Altima or are in the market for a new or used one, you’ve come to the right place with your battery-related questions!

How big is a Nissan Altima battery?

Recent Altima model years use either a 35 or an H5group size battery. The group size indicates how long, wide, and high the battery is as well as where its battery terminals (negative and positive) are located.
You’ll notice that the 35 and H5 group sizes are different when it comes to dimensions, but don’t worry too much about the details. Unless you’re trying to install a battery from another group size in your car (which is not recommended), you won’t need to take measurements to buy a battery.
Instead, to find a battery that will fit, all you need to do is type in your model year and trim level into the database at an auto parts store. Or you can consult the service department at a Nissan dealership and provide your VIN. Online databases make it easy to find the exact battery size for your exact vehicle.

Nissan Altima battery sizes and average life span

As noted above, batteries are grouped by sizes determined by battery manufacturing standards. A battery must conform to its group size, which has specific dimensions (height x length x width).
You’ll see the letters CCA and CA as well. The abbreviation CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps. This refers to the amps a battery pushes out when it is 0 degrees outside and the engine is cold. CA stands for Cranking Amps at 32 degrees.
CCA/CA numbers can vary. The chart below indicates a typical CCA/CA for each battery group. If you live in a cold climate, you probably want to choose a battery with 600+ CCA.
As you’ll see below, Altima engineers installed a 35 group size battery in their 2015-2018 models and a H5 in newer Altimas (since 2019).

A note about substitutions: when you input your Altima’s year into a battery database, you may see Group 47 recommended alongside Group H5, or you may see Group 26R in a list along with Group 35. They are very close in size and can be swapped out. However, if possible, try to stick to the group size of your OEM battery (the battery that came with your Altima).
Nissan released a hybrid version of the Altima in 2007, but then discontinued it in 2011. If you own a hybrid, you should still be able to find a replacement for your car’s 245-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. In addition to checking for a replacement through your local Nissan dealer, check online for sellers.

How to extend the life of your Nissan Altima battery

Most car owners find they can get 3-5 years out of an average battery. Here are some tips for extending the life of your battery:
  • Don’t forget to turn off your lights. Lights can quickly drain a battery, and it’s not unusual to leave the running lights on after parking your car. If you tend to do this, attach a sticky note somewhere on your dashboard as a reminder.
  • When idling, turn off your radio. If you’re going to be standing for a while with the engine on, limit the electronics that you leave on. It’ll put less wear on the battery.
  • Check for corrosion. Battery terminals tend to corrode, so make it a point to check your battery on a regular basis. If you see corrosion build up, use baking soda and water mixture on a toothbrush to scrub off the corrosion.
  • Consider a trickle charger if you’re not going to be driving for a while or your car is in storage. Batteries in cars that aren’t driven for over a week, begin to lose their charge. If you’re storing your car in a garage, consider hooking your car battery up to a trickle charger to keep your battery going strong.

How does a standard AGM Altima battery measure up to the competition?

Most car experts recommend that you install an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery in a newer Altima. However, you don’t necessarily need to. This chart below will walk you through options when it comes to battery types.
Battery type
Details
Wet cell (AKA flooded)
This is the oldest car battery type and requires you to top off the electrolyte solution in the battery (AKA “adding water to the battery”. It's inexpensive, but has declined in popularity since the VRLA-type battery came on the market.
Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA)
A sealed battery (you don’t add water to it). It's low maintenance, and there are several subtypes of VRLA.
Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM)
This is a type of VRLA battery. It charges quickly (up to 5xs faster) and is well-suited for cars with start-stop fuel-saving feature, but it's more expensive.
Gel cell
This is another type of VRLA battery that uses silica dust; they have good resistance to shocks and vibrations. Like other sealed batteries, it resists corrosion.
Lithium Ion (Li-ion)
Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EV) require this kind of battery, which lasts a long time (5-8+ years), but they are very expensive. They are designed to store a lot of energy.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
