Where can I find my Mazda’s paint code?

Having the correct paint code is vital so you don’t end up with an unsightly blotch of mismatched color on your hood. Luckily, this code is located in two separate places on your car, so it can be found easily:
  • The driver’s side doorjamb (the part of the door that houses the locking mechanism)
  • Under the hood, on the firewall (the wall that separates the passenger cabin from the engine cabin)
You’ll be looking for the two- or three-digit letter and number code next to the phrase “color code” or “body color code.”

is a handy cross-reference for Mazda paint colors, and it provides the paint color names for each code.

What if there’s no paint code on the car’s label?

You can easily figure out your car’s paint color if you have the vehicle identification number (VIN). This is a 17-character number unique to your vehicle. Use it to search online or bring it to the dealership for confirmation on which color paint you need.
Here’s where you can find the VIN for your Mazda:
  • On a plate attached to the driver’s side dashboard, and visible through the windshield from outside the vehicle
  • Your insurance card and vehicle registration
  • On a label inside the driver’s side door frame

Where can I get paint for my Mazda?

Head to
your local Mazda dealership
, and they should have touch-up paint available for purchase. If your car is an older model, you may want to call ahead to ensure they have your paint color in stock.
Mazda touch-up paint can also be purchased from third-party retailers online or in stores. All you need is your vehicle’s paint code, and you should be able to get a match.
Paint comes in different varieties, depending on how much you need and what you’re comfortable working with. You can purchase paint in spray cans, touch-up bottles, or even paint pens. A Mazda paint pen can be an easy and less expensive way to touch up small scratches.
Note that some Mazda red shades are reportedly difficult to match when purchased from some third-party manufacturers. You may wish to get your red paint direct from Mazda or research which brands of paint are sure matches for your red vehicle.

Paint touch-up tips

Here are the steps to follow to get your Mazda looking like its old self again:
  • Wash the area you will be painting with soapy water
  • Use fine sandpaper or a wire brush to remove any visible rust
  • Apply a primer to the area and allow to dry overnight. Once dry, sand gently for an even painting surface
  • Paint the area with the correct color of paint for your Mazda. You can use spray paint, bottle paint, or a paint pen. Apply several coats, with 20 minutes’ drying time between coats. After the final coat, leave it to dry overnight
  • Apply a clear protective coat to the area. You will need a few coats, with 20 minutes’ drying time between layers. Leave this to dry overnight
  • After three days, buff the area with a rubbing compound. Oooh—so shiny!

FAQs

Many people have had a particular issue with Mazda red paint chipping easily, especially with Mazda Soul Red Crystal paint. This is a soft, thin paint that doesn’t fare well in sunny or snowy weather. If your paint begins to chip early into its life, contact your dealer as the paint may still be under warranty.
You can! It all depends on whether you are comfortable doing it and can set aside the time. You’ll also need to make sure you get the correct paint, a clear coat, a buffer, and the right tools. But keep in mind that while painting a scratch or chip might be easy, painting your whole car is likely something best professionally done.
