Lexus GX 460 engine oil capacity

Before you can become an at-home vehicle maintenance expert, we’ll need to go back to the basics. To start, let’s go over just how much engine oil a Lexus GX 460 actually needs.
Your Lexus’ engine has an oil capacity of 8.2 quarts, or 7.8 liters. Just don’t get this number confused with your engine’s displacement—the 4.6-liter volume its cylinders take up. In contrast, your Lexus’ oil capacity refers to the amount of oil your car needs each time it has an oil change.
While the two numbers are easy to confuse with one another, they are not interchangeable—you could end up causing major damage to the engine.

What kind of oil does a Lexus GX 460 need?

Now that we know how much your engine needs, let’s go over what type of oil is best suited to your Lexus. That’s right—your oil capacity isn’t the only vehicle-specific factor you’ll need to consider.
While you’re scanning the aisles for the right oil, look for what the Lexus manufacturers recommend: SAE 0W-20 motor oil.
If you’re new to the oil-changing business, the oil grade’s numbers and letters might look about as clear as gibberish. Don’t worry, we’ll go over what it all means.
SAE simply stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the entity that codes an oil’s grade, while each number tells us how viscous the oil is at different temperatures. The number 0 preceding the “W”, which stands for “winter”, refers to the oil’s low viscosity at 0°F. Contrarily, the number 20 tells us that oil also has a low viscosity at 212°F
Why does it matter how viscous an oil is, anyways? Simply put, a lower viscosity oil will put less stress on your engine while performing smoothly in a variety of temperatures.
To take the manufacturer's advice, use
Toyota Genuine Motor Oil
. However, if you are unable to find any 0W-20 motor oil, the owner's manual states that it is acceptable to use 5W-20 motor oil as a short term replacement until your next oil change.

How often to change oil on a Lexus GX 460

Now that you know your Lexus’ engine oil capacity and compatible oil type, you’re ready to perform an
oil change
So how do you know if it’s time to change your oil? Lexus recommends changing your oil every 10,000 miles. However, that benchmark is merely a suggestion.
If you use conventional oil rather than synthetic, you may need to change it sooner. Likewise, if your vehicle spends most of its time in “park”, you can adjust the oil change benchmark to every six months
To ensure you’re changing the oil at the right time, it’s a good idea to check your oil level on a regular basis (e.g. once a month or every other refuel). If you notice or experience any of the following symptoms, it’s time to change your oil:
  • A darker and grittier motor oil: This means that your oil is getting dirty—clean oil should be light in color
  • Strange or
    loud engine noises
    while you’re driving
  • Unfamiliar smells coming from the engine—especially anything smelling like it’s burning
  • A decrease in engine performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you hit that 10,000 mile benchmark or experience changes in your vehicle’s performance, it’s time to put your maintenance hat on. The first step? Gather your materials!
Ensure you have a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter on hand. Don’t forget your 9 quarts of 0W-20 engine oil!
Follow these steps to change your Lexus GX 460 oil and filter:
  • Let your engine run until it reaches a normal operating temperature (roughly 5 minutes)
  • Turn off your engine, open the hood, and locate your oil reservoir
  • Remove the oil fill cap, along with the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Drain the old oil into the drain pain
  • As the oil drains, remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • With a new washer, replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with 8.2 quarts of new oil and replace the fill cap
  • Using a dipstick, ensure you’ve added the right amount of oil to your engine
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
And that’s it! After you’ve finished changing your oil, let your Lexus run for a few minutes and watch out for leaks. If you’ve changed your oil correctly, your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
will turn off.
The last step? Dump the old oil into a container and bring it to a recycling center to properly dispose of it!
