How to change Kia Sorento power steering fluid

If you’re looking to save a few dollars, cutting the cost of a mechanic’s labor by completing at-home maintenance is a surefire way to do so. Plus, you don’t need to be an automotive expert to swap out your
Kia's
power steering fluid.
All you’ll need for this DIY maintenance task is:
  • A syringe to remove the used fluid
  • A container for the used fluid
  • A rubber cap to cover the reservoir mouth
  • A funnel for the new fluid
  • A rag or cotton cloth to clean any fluid spills
  • PSF-III
To change your Kia Sorento power steering fluid, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Remove the power steering fluid reservoir and remove the old fluid with your syringe.
Step 2: If any fluid remains in the reservoir, unplug the reservoir’s return hose (the thin, sideways-facing hose) and place it into your container. Allow the remaining fluid to drain into the container.
Step 3: Cover the mouth of the unplugged return hose with your rubber cap.
Step 4:  Using your funnel, add new fluid to the reservoir until it’s full.
Step 5: Turn on the engine and turn your wheel back and forth to discharge any remaining old power steering fluid.
Step 6: As the fluid level decreases, continue to refill the reservoir with new fluid until red, clean fluid is coming out of the hose.
Step 7: Turn your car off, remove the rubber cap and plug the hose back in its place.
And there you have it—fresh power steering fluid in your reservoir! Once you’ve completed all seven steps, check the ground under the vehicle for any leaks. Lastly, take the car for a quick spin to ensure your steering feels smooth and easy.

What is the power steering fluid change interval for a Kia Sorento?

You should change the power steering fluid in your Kia Sorento every 50,000 miles or every two years—whichever comes first.
However, it’s worth checking on your fluid periodically to ensure it remains in good condition. If you notice any of the following signs or symptoms, it’s time to change the fluid:
  • Unusually stiff or loose steering
  • A groaning noise under the hood when turning the steering wheel
  • Black or brown fluid in power steering reservoir (fluid should be clear pink or amber in color)
