At some point or another, you’ll probably have to open your Jeep Patriot’s hood and take a look inside. Usually, this is to facilitate some sort of
car repair
—like
changing the oil
or replacing
spark plugs
—but actually opening the hood can sometimes be trickier than it seems. That’s why we threw together this handy guide to popping your Jeep Patriot’s hood.
We’ll tell you where to find the hood release latch, how to disengage the secondary safety catch, and the right kind of
car insurance
you need to cover a repair. Without further ado, let’s take a look under the hood!

Where is the hood release on a Jeep Patriot?

The hood release on a Jeep Patriot is located on the left kick panel of the driver’s side door below the steering wheel.
In most cars, the hood release latch is usually somewhere near the driver’s left leg. Keep an eye out for a lever with a picture of a car with an open hood on it. That’s the first thing you’ll need to pull to open the hood.
The Patriot also features a secondary hood release safety catch between the lip of the hood and the front grille. You’ll probably have to feel around for it, but you can usually find it behind the “Jeep” emblem on the hood. Once you find and pull the secondary lever, your hood should pop right open.

How to open the hood on a Jeep Patriot

After you disengage your Patriot’s secondary latch, you should be able to
open the hood of your car
. Just follow these steps:
  1. Pull the hood release lever located inside your Jeep Patriot until you hear the hood pop open.
  2. Use a flashlight to check between the hood and grille to find the secondary hood release latch.
  3. Pull the lever, release the safety latch, and open the hood.
  4. Find the prop rod and insert it into the notch on the underside of your hood.
Now that your hood is unlatched, you should have complete access to the engine compartment. If you can’t seem to get your hood to pop, you might have a broken or defective hood release lever.

What if the hood release latch doesn’t work?

If you pull on the hood release latch but don’t hear the “pop” of your trunk opening, you could very well be dealing with a broken hood latch release cable. You should still be able to get your Patriot’s hood open, albeit with the help of a flathead screwdriver and a flashlight.
Find the secondary hood release latch located between the lip of the hood and the front grille. Typically, the hood latch cable is attached to the right side of the release lever. Position your flathead screwdriver below the right side of the release lever and push upwards until the latch is released. All you have to do now is open the secondary safety latch as per usual.

How to repair the Jeep Patriot hood release

Whether you’ve got a faulty hood release cable or you need to
replace your hood latch
entirely, you’re much better off having an experienced mechanic perform the repair. Without a decent amount of experience in the auto repair field, these parts can be pretty tough to swap out.
Luckily, it’s not a terribly expensive fix—the average cost is between $136 and $148. Going to a Jeep dealership is a good way to make sure that genuine OEM parts are used in the repair, but you’ll probably have to pay a little extra if the repair isn’t covered under warranty. Visiting an independent mechanic can save you some money, but it might not be necessary if you have
OEM coverage
on your car insurance policy.
If your hood latch was damaged in a
fender bender
or other accident, the cost of repairs will be covered under
collision insurance
. If you only have
liability coverage
, you’ll have to pay for those repairs yourself.
