What to do if your Infiniti Q50 trunk won’t open

Perhaps most importantly, the first thing you should do is try not to panic. If you have valuables locked inside your trunk, it may be tempting to race straight to an auto shop to get them to open it—but there are things you can try first to save yourself some time and money.

Most common cause: activating valet mode

If you’re like many drivers, you may be asking yourself, “What is valet mode?” Unless you’re regularly handing your vehicle off to other people, you might not even realize this is a feature on your Infiniti Q50. Valet mode is meant to keep passengers or temporary drivers from getting into your car’s glove box or trunk. Unfortunately, accidentally activating it means you might be the one locked out.
Check your glove box. Inside, there will be a small switch with a picture of a car with an open trunk on it—much like the button on your key fob. This is the trunk release cancel switch, and if it’s in the “off” position, that means valet mode is active. Turning it back to “on” will allow you to use the interior trunk release lever and your key fob to open your trunk.
It’s worth noting that the mechanical key stored in your key fob will always open the trunk, even if valet mode is on. If you can’t find the switch or the mechanism is damaged, you will still have access via the mechanical key.

Other possible causes

Of course, you may have already ruled out valet mode. If you know that’s not the issue, here are some other reasons your Infiniti Q50 trunk might be stuck shut:
  • Broken trunk cable: There is a cable running from the interior trunk release to the trunk itself. Should this cable break, the trunk will be unresponsive.
  • Broken latch: If you’ve recently been rear-ended or backed into something, the latch inside your trunk may have been damaged. Though this can sometimes keep the lid from closing, it can also seal it shut, especially if your trunk was closed during the incident.
  • Key fob battery: Your keyless entry may have lost its charge. Try opening your trunk through the interior release or with the mechanical key. If these work, the fault is most likely with your key batteries, which means you won’t be able to use the fob for the rest of your car doors either.
  • Faulty wiring: Trunks can have electrical faults, just like any other part of your car. A blown fuse or broken actuator can cause issues with opening your trunk.
Most of these issues will require professional intervention. You’ll need to take your Infiniti Q50 to a dealership or qualified mechanic for them to diagnose the issue.

How to manually open an Infiniti Q50 trunk

When it comes to manually unlocking your Infiniti Q50 trunk, you’re in luck. The Q50 has easy access to the trunk from the interior. You can reach inside and pull the emergency release handle without any trouble. All you’ll need is the mechanical key.
  • First, pull down the center armrest in the rear seat.
  • This is where you’ll need that key. There will be a small lid separating the seats from the cargo space. Unlock the lid and remove it.
  • You should now have access to the trunk and the emergency release handle. The handle may glow in the dark if it’s been exposed to light, making the process even easier. If there’s no glow, you may need to use a flashlight to locate it. It will be on the top of the trunk.
  • Just pull the handle toward you, and the trunk should release!
Be aware that the emergency release handle is meant to be pulled from inside the trunk. It may be tricky to reach if you’re trying to access it from the back seat instead. You may need to contact the dealership if you are unable to reach it.

Cost of trunk repair for Infiniti Q50

If you’re lucky, flipping that valet mode switch will have solved your problem. However, if that didn’t work, you’re probably going to have to fork over some cash.
You can find a trunk lid release switch on
Infiniti’s official website
for $66.64 or one of those cables we mentioned for $229.56—and that’s without labor! In fact,
Your Mechanic
estimates just the inspection cost to be around $95, with a full
trunk latch replacement
averaging $255.
Of course, if your latch was damaged in an accident, you could need to add the
trunk trim panel
to that cost ($336.42) and a
trunk lid
($1,272.87), too!
