What kind of sound system does a Tesla Model Y have?

While Tesla keeps details about its sound systems pretty close to the vest, we still know some specifics. For example, while we don’t know the specific brand of speaker that Tesla uses, we do know that the system was developed by former Bang & Olufsen engineers.
The Tesla Model Y has a 13-speaker system that includes a 160-watt subwoofer and an amplifier. The whole system weighs in at around 600 watts.
The Model Y has three speakers front and center between the dashboard and windscreen. There’s a tweeter by each of the front door triangles, a speaker in both A-pillars, and an 8” subwoofer in each of the front doors.
And for the back passengers, there are speakers located in each of the back doors and another speaker toward the trunk lid. The 160-watt subwoofer is located in the trunk.
As far as connectivity goes, the Tesla Model Y only supports Bluetooth and doesn’t have Android Auto or Apple Carplay capabilities. However, you do have the option of plugging in a USB drive loaded with high-quality music files.
All in all, the Tesla Model Y has a solid sound system that delivers a quality sound experience. But if you’re wanting to change or upgrade your system, keep reading.

How to upgrade a Tesla Model Y sound system

Here’s the bottom line: when it comes to electric vehicles, you can sometimes change your speakers and subwoofers, but you’re stuck with the factory amplifier.
Unlike standard vehicles which can easily be customized, electric vehicles make things like audio upgrades very difficult. For one, the Tesla Model Y has very sensitive electronics which can easily be damaged if you start rooting around and disconnecting speakers. Also, since sound systems use electricity, getting the wrong kind of upgrades can put too much of a drain on your electric vehicle.

Start with speaker upgrades

You can swap out your Model Y’s speakers, but be prepared to drop a good amount of cash to do so. Not only do you have to pay for parts, but since the electronics are so sensitive, you’ll need to have a professional install any new equipment.
You’ll also want to consider if you want to swap out all of your speakers or just focus on a few at a time. Here’s a look at some aftermarket audio upgrade options for the Model Y:

Pump up the bass with a subwoofer

The Model Y already has a subwoofer installed in the trunk, so you’ll have to remove that before you’ll have room for a subwoofer upgrade. One option is the
NVX subwoofer box
to help boost your sound system.

What’s the difference between a 4-ohm subwoofer and a 2-ohm sub?

When you’re looking at subwoofers, you might run into the 4-ohm vs. 2-ohm debate. Really, it all comes down to personal preference—the 2-ohm subwoofers have louder sounds, while the 4-ohm has a deeper and clearer sound.

How to protect your Tesla Model Y sound system—and save on insurance!

Upgrading your Tesla Model Y’s sound system can get pretty complicated, and to make matters worse, it can also seriously affect your car insurance premiums.
Most car insurance policies only cover a vehicle’s factory equipment, meaning your aftermarket sound system won’t be covered. And, since adding a new system increases your risk of theft, your
