You’ve racked up enough miles or time to warrant changing your oil, so head to the store for the proper materials. This includes a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, are placement filter, and at least four quarts of 0W-20 engine oil.

Let your engine run for around five minutes until it reaches its regular operating temperature. Once it’s warm enough, turn the engine off,

open the hood

, and follow these steps:

Find the oil fill cap and take it off

Get under the car and take out the oil drain bolt and washer, placing the drain pan below to catch the emptying oil

Remove the old oil filter and let the oil continue draining

Install the new filter

Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft

Add the correct amount of new oil and replace the fill cap

Check that you’ve added enough oil by using your dipstick. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.

If you’re finished, run the engine for a short while and watch out for leaks. Your
