Where can I find my GMC’s paint code?

To figure out what paint to choose, you’ll need to find your GMC’s paint code. This code is located on your GMC’s service parts indicator sticker. However, the location of this sticker can move depending on the vehicle model.
You’ll likely find the service parts indicator sticker either:
  • In the glovebox
  • On the driver’s door jamb
The paint code usually starts with BC/CC, which stands for basecoat/clearcoat. Then, after a space, there is a U and the numerical code.

What if there’s no paint code on the car’s label?

Some older GMCs won’t have the paint code listed inside the car. For these vehicles, you’ll have to find the paint code using your GMC’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). A VIN is 17 units long and contains both numbers and letters.
Here’s where you can find the VIN for your GMC:
  • The VIN may be written on a sticker either on the driver's side door, inside the dashboard, or on the door jamb. Or the VIN sticker may be placed under the hood.
  • If you can’t find the VIN number on the vehicle, the number will be written on the car’s registration and title document
Once you have the VIN you can look up the paint code, either online or by calling a GMC dealer.

Where can I get paint for my GMC?

Once you know what paint you need, you can order it
directly from GMC
, at an auto retailer, or from an online merchant.
As long as you have the correct paint code, there’s no need to buy directly from GMC if you don’t want to.

Paint touch-up tips

Now that you’ve got your paint in hand, you can get started on your touch-up job! Here are a few tips for touch-up painting your GMC:
  • Wash the area that needs a touch-up using soap and water.
  • If there is any rust, use sandpaper or a wire brush to wear down the rust.
  • Apply primer to the bare metal or plastic you plan to paint. Let it dry overnight then sand the area to get an even surface.
  • Paint using the correct paint you found using the paint code. Apply multiple coats, waiting twenty minutes between each.
  • The next day, add a clear protective coat to keep your paint job safe. As before, do multiple layers with a break in between.
  • After waiting three more days, buff the area to get a nice shine.
If the area needing a touch-up is small, consider buying a paint pen or smaller paint pack instead of investing in a full can of paint.
