How big is a Ford Ranger battery?

Car batteries are organized into categories of group size based on their physical size. You need to find a battery that fits the exact length, width, and height of your battery compartment. Otherwise, the terminals won’t line up and you won’t have any power!
In a Ford Ranger, the most common battery size groups are H7, H6, and 59.
Here are the measurements for each group size in inches, along with the model years and trim that typically uses that group size:
  • Group Size H7: 12 3/8" x 6 7/8" x 7 1/2". For optional trim on 2020-2019 Ford Ranger models or 2022 Ford Ranger models.
  • Group Size H6: 12 1/16" x 6 7/8" x 7 9/16". Most standard 2021-2019 Ford Ranger models.
  • Group Size 59: 10 1/16" x 7 5/8" x 7 3/4". Most standard 1997-2011 Ford Ranger models.
  • Group Size 58: 10 1/16" x 7 3/16" x 6 15/16". Most standard 1989-1996 Ford Ranger models.
If you’re unsure which battery size is right for your Ranger, here’s a quick tip: pop your hood and look at your battery. The size should be printed right on the battery itself.
Has the size label rubbed off your battery? Don’t worry, just check your owner’s manual.
When your Ford Ranger needs a new battery, you’ll have the choice between aftermarket and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) batteries. In general, OEM is preferred by mechanics. If you can, try to use the same brand of battery originally used by Ford.

Ford Ranger battery lifespan

The average lifespan of a Ford Ranger battery is between three and five years.
Your battery could last longer—or die sooner. It all depends on how you drive and the weather where you live. Hot climates are particularly harsh on batteries because they cause the fluid to evaporate. Corrosion is also more likely.
Practice good battery maintenance to
prolong the life of your car battery
. Use a wire brush and anti-corrosion cleaner to scrub the terminals regularly.
Of course, it’s possible that you may need to
replace the battery
before it dies. In fact, we recommend it! If your lights are dim or your power windows are slow,
your battery may be low
. Replace it ASAP or risk getting stranded.

How does the Ford Ranger battery measure up to the competition?

Ford batteries are about average when it comes to lifespan. Most other car brands produce batteries that last between three and five years.
The only way to get a longer-lasting battery is to choose an electric car.
You may be able to get 10 years of life out of your Ranger’s battery with proper care. But it’s more likely that you’ll have to replace it after about five years. That’s not to say anything bad about the quality of Ford’s batteries—it’s just how batteries are made.
