2022 Ford F150 5.0L engine oil capacity

The 5.0-liter V8 option for the F150 is a big, powerful engine, putting out 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The Ford F150 5.0-L engine has an oil capacity of 7.7 qt or 7.3 L with a filter change.
Especially with an engine this big, it is important not to confuse the
engine displacement
with the oil capacity. When you see something like a “5.0-liter engine,” this describes the volume swept by the engine and is used to describe the size of the engine. It is, however, distinct from the oil capacity.

What kind of oil does a 2022 Ford F150 5.0L need?

Now that you know your f150’s oil capacity, let's talk about what type of oil to buy. Ford recommends using a 5W-30 synthetic blend oil.
“5W-30” describes the viscosity of the oil in both cold temperatures (the “5W”) and at normal operating temperatures (the “30”). The presence of two numbers tells you that it is a multi-grade oil, rated at two temperatures, which is essential for any
engine oil
.
If you happen to live somewhere that experiences especially cold winters (like -20°F) cold, you might want to consider switching to a 0W-30 oil instead. You can run this oil year-round, but when the temperatures do get particularly cold, this oil will serve you better thanks to its lower viscosity in cold conditions.
As for whether or not to go for a synthetic blend or fully synthetic oil, that is up to you. Sticking with the manufacturer's recommendations is usually a good choice, but switching to fully synthetic oil will have benefits of its own, like a longer change interval and better engine performance, but it comes at a higher price point. Generally, though it is best to pick on and stick with it rather than regularly alternating between different oil types.
Here are a few oil recommendations to get you started:

How often to change the oil on a 2022 Ford F150

The next thing you’ll need to know is how often to change your oil. With a synthetic blend, it is typically recommended to change your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Fully synthetic oil will up that range to about 7,500 to 10,000 miles. On the high end, in some situations, synthetic oils can last up to 15,000 miles.
If you want to play it safe, you can aim to change your oil every six months. The best practice, though, is to
check your oil
regularly. Every month or so, check your dipstick for signs that your oil is getting old and dirty. Here are some common signs that it’s time for an oil change:
  • Oil that is dark brown or black (clean oil should be light brown or amber and transparent)
  • Oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • Smells of burning, oil, or smoke
  • Changes in your vehicle performance like reduced fuel efficiency or power

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once it’s time for an oil change, you have the option of taking your car to a shop or doing the change yourself. Most mechanics will charge around $80 to $120 for an oil change with synthetic oil. If you do it yourself, of course, you only have to front the cost of the oil.
If you’ve decided to try doing it yourself, you’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, a new filter, and a filter wrench. Of course, you’ll also need 7.7 qt of 5W-30 engine oil.
Before you remove any caps, run your engine for a few minutes to get it up to normal operating temperatures. Once you’re there, turn off the engine, pop the hood and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Under the engine, position the drain pan and remove the oil drain bolt and washer to drain the oil into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and let the oil drain completely
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with new oil
  • Confirm the fill level with your dipstick and replace the fill cap
  • Run your engine for a few minutes and check for any leaks.
Once you’re done, dispose of the old oil responsibly by taking it to a local recycling center
