The valve cover is a very important part that helps protect your engine. Get a mechanic’s help ASAP to inspect your vehicle if you suspect a problem with the valve cover.
There are two key signs that you may need a valve cover replacement: oil leaks and a rough running engine. You may also catch a whiff of burnt oil. The valve cover is a part that stops oil from leaking out of your engine. If it gets loose or breaks, oil could seep out. This would create a dangerously dry environment that produces excess friction and results in engine damage. Yikes!
The car insurance super app Jerry has compiled a short guide with everything you need to know about a valve cover replacement.
The exact cost varies between different Subaru models. For example, newer vehicle models are usually made with more expensive materials, so recent or high-end models will cost more, especially if your service requires a part replacement. Use the table below to estimate the cost for your own vehicle.

What is a valve cover replacement?

Your valve cover, also known as a rocker cover, must be tight and unbroken. If this metal or plastic part is faulty, it won’t contain oil inside the engine. Here are the basic steps for a valve cover replacement:
  • The mechanic will open the hood to examine the engine and the valve cover.
  • If the valve cover needs to be removed and replaced, the mechanic will do so. If it is sealed by silicone RTV, the mechanic will remove this sealant entirely.
  • The mechanic will install a new valve cover, fastening with bolts and silicon RTV if required.
  • To confirm that the repair is successful, the mechanic may do a test drive and then check the oil level with a dipstick.

How to get a valve cover replacement

A valve cover replacement is a straightforward procedure. Mechanics may need:
  • Engine access
  • Silicone RTV or another sealant
  • A new valve cover
  • New valve cover bolts
Call a garage and explain the symptoms you’re observing. Describe any oil leaks, bad smells, or reduced engine performance. Ask for a valve cover inspection and replacement.

How long will the replacement take?

A valve cover replacement could take just a few hours. It depends on how serious the damage is and how busy the mechanic is.

How do I know if I need to get a valve cover replacement?

Leaking oil is a clear sign that your valve cover, seal, or gasket needs attention. If you don’t see oil on the ground, then see if you can smell it burning under the hood. Finally, you may notice a decrease in horsepower or trouble accelerating. If you observe any of the above signs, bring your vehicle to a mechanic to see if it needs a valve cover replacement.

How important is a valve cover replacement?

This repair is critical. The valve cover keeps oil contained within the engine, allowing its parts to move smoothly with minimal friction. Without it, the engine could sustain serious damage. If you don’t want to replace your entire engine, get your valve cover replaced as soon as it shows signs of leakage.
