A Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel with an I6 6.7L engine uses two batteries. The battery size for both is Battery Council International (BCI) Group 94R.
These batteries are commonly used in trucks and have a cold cranking amp (CCA) varying between 790 CCA and 840 CCA. A higher CCA indicates a more powerful performance and is more expensive as a result.
Diesel Ram trucks have been a fixture on the heavy-duty pickup truck for decades, but if you’ve never taken a good look under the hood, you may not know that a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel uses two batteries of the same size. A diesel engine requires nearly double the battery power of a gas engine to start, which is why two 94R batteries are needed.

How big is a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel battery?

A 2022 Ram 2500 has two engine options: a 6.7-liter turbo diesel I6 and a 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The only trim level that is not available with a diesel engine is the
Power Wagon
.
The turbocharged diesel engine requires two batteries with group Code 94R. All batteries have a designated CCA current, the batteries for your Ram 2500 Diesel should have a CCA range between 790 CCA and 840 CCA. The larger the number, the higher the battery’s power.
These batteries should be as close to identical as possible: same brand, same size, and same age. If you replace one Group 94R battery, you must also replace the other.
You may be able to find a set of Group 94R batteries at a local auto parts store, or you can purchase them online at a retailer like
BatteriesPlus
. Depending on the CCA count, a single Group 94R battery costs anywhere from $200 to $350. There is some variance in the dimensions of 94R batteries, but they should measure around 12.40 x 6.90 x 7.50 inches.

Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel battery life

The average lifespan of a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel battery is about three to five years. Certain factors play into how long your batteries last—for instance, if you live in a colder climate, your battery may have a longer life
Another factor is how often your drive your Ram. Vehicle batteries charge whenever you drive—that’s why it’s recommended to drive your car around for at least 15 minutes after
jump-starting
a battery. When vehicles sit dormant for long periods, the battery power drains.
If your Ram’s batteries are reaching their end, there should be warning signs. Here are a few signals of a failing battery:
  • Clicking or lagging when you start your truck
  • One or both batteries appears corroded
  • Batteries die often and require frequent jumpstarts
  • Radio won’t turn on
  • Dim or flickering headlights

How to keep your Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel battery healthy

Keeping your Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel battery healthy can mostly be chalked up to good habits. Let’s take a look at some practices that have a positive effect on battery life:
  • Run the engine or drive your truck regularly. Depending on your lifestyle, you may not drive your truck daily, but you should still make a habit of regularly firing up the engine and driving it around the block to keep the batteries charged.
  • Manually charge the battery if you won’t be driving for a while. If you’re about to jet off for a vacation or storing your truck away for a season, it’s a good idea to remove the batteries and charge them manually before driving your vehicle again.
  • Turn off your lights! Forgetting to turn off your headlights or leaving on one or more interior lights overnight may leave you with a dead battery the next time you attempt to start the engine.
  • Don’t ignore maintenance issues. You should never disregard performance abnormalities because they only get worse with time, but if you notice glitches with your vehicle’s electrical system this could deplete your battery as well.
  • Unplug those cords. Most of us are guilty of leaving that USB cord plugged in 24/7, but if you don’t drive every day, plugged-in cords can gradually drain your battery to the point that your vehicle won’t start.
You can periodically check the health of your Ram 2500 Diesel batteries with the aid of a voltmeter. Turn the ignition off, pop the hood, and connect the voltmeter’s red lead to the positive battery terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal to get a voltage read. Healthy batteries should be in the 12.4 to 12.7 voltage range.
