How to replace a Chrysler tail light

Cost: $30 to $100
Time: 10-20 minutes
Tools needed: Replacement bulb, work gloves, safety glasses
Difficulty: Easy!
Tail lights are located in the tail light assembly, which is the unit in the back consisting of the bulbs, the bulb sockets, and the protective compartment that focuses the light outwards.
If you do determine that your issue is a broken bulb, it’s quite easy to fix on a Chrysler! The first thing to do is to buy a replacement bulb. Most major auto parts stores carry a wide variety of bulbs and can tell you the specific kind to purchase once you give them the exact model of your Chrysler.
With your bulb in hand, it’s time to unleash your inner mechanic. Here’s how you replace a tail light in a Chrysler:
  • Open the trunk and peel back the trunk liner on the side that has the broken tail light. Be careful not to pull too hard as you do not want the liner to rip.
  • Find the rear of the assembly casing. It should be held in place by two wing nuts, also known as butterfly nuts.
  • Remove the wing nuts.
  •  Pull the assembly away from the car while simultaneously pushing on the studs inside the trunk.
  •  Twist the bulb connectors a quarter-turn counterclockwise and remove the connector.
  • Carefully remove the old bulb and gently replace it with the new bulb.
  •  Lock the connector back into the assembly and secure it by twisting a quarter turn clockwise.
  • Set the assembly back on the car and secure the wing nuts.
  •  Unfold the trunk liner back into its original location.
Key Takeaway Replacing a tail light bulb is an easy fix on a Chrysler, and the only cost for you is to purchase the replacement bulb.

Commons reasons for Chrysler tail light malfunctions

Sometimes it's obvious why your tail light is broken—if you have been in an accident, or if your car was hit by storm debris, there’s not much guessing to do.
But if you’re not sure why your bulb has gone dark, here are some common reasons:
  • Burned out bulb: By far the most common reason is that the bulb has finally reached the end of its life. This tends to be the case if just one light is out.
  • Blown fuse: This can often be the root cause when multiple lights are out at once. Luckily, if there is an even easier and cheaper fix for cars than replacing a tail light, it's replacing a blown fuse.
  • Damaged socket: The tail light assembly is designed to be a sealed system. If this seal breaks, water can get into the electrical socket and cause short circuits.
  • Electrical system issues: If you notice other electronics in your car malfunctioning at the same time, there could be a deeper issue with your car’s electrical system. In this instance, it may be a good idea to take your car into the shop.

Does car insurance cover broken tail lights?

The simple answer is: it depends!
If your car is in an accident,
collision coverage
insurance (or the other driver’s policy if they are deemed at fault) will cover the cost to repair or replace a broken tail light.
Or if you purchase
comprehensive insurance
and your car is damaged in a non-driving incident, such as by storm debris or vandalism, you’ll be covered.
Insurance will often not cover a burnt-out bulb as this is a normal part of wear and tear that happens to cars as they age.
Even if your tail light bulb is damaged, it may not be a good idea to bring an insurance claim to fix it. The reason is that because the repair is so cheap, it may be difficult to meet your
deductible
. Taking your car’s maintenance into your own hands can be fun, and it may just save you money in the long run.
