What if there’s no paint code on the car’s label?

Sometimes you won’t be able to locate your service parts identification sticker or the text and numbers may be illegible. In this case, you can type in your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to find Buick paint codes. The VIN is a 17 character string of numbers and letters.
Look for your Buick’s VIN in these places:
  • Driver’s side door jamb
  • Under the windshield on the driver’s side
  • On the steering column
  • Under your hood
Your vehicle’s title and registration papers will also contain the VIN.

Where can I get paint for my Buick?

After you have found the paint code for your Buick, you can purchase paint from an auto parts store (e.g., AutoZone) or an online site.

How to do a paint touch-up

There are a few considerations you’ll want to make to ensure your paint job looks as professional as possible:
  • Test and Practice. First, test the color on an unpainted piece of metal to make sure the color matches your car. Then, practice with the pen or paintbrush.
  • Make sure the weather is right. You’ll want to paint on a day that has low humidity and is at least 50 degrees F. If you are using spray paint, it needs to be 70 degrees F.
  • Prep your vehicle. Wash the area you are painting and consider using wax remover. If there is any rust, wipe it off and/or use 220 grit sandpaper.
  • On bare metal or plastic use a primer. Let the thin coat of primer dry for at least 20-30 minutes. Check the primer bottle for directions.
  • Apply the base coat. This is the paint that you purchased to match your vehicle. Apply it in thin coats, allowing each coat to dry for at least 20-30 minutes. It may take several coats to match the rest of the car.
  • Apply the clear coat. Be careful to float the clear coat over the paint—do not press down. As with the base coat, you’ll want to apply a few very thin layers, allowing at least 20-30 minutes of drying time between coats.
  • Wait three days, then apply a rubbing compound.
With a little practice and some patience, you should be able to achieve good results if the damage is minimal.
