background
The Buick Enclave’s battery size puts it in the H6 or H7 battery size group, depending on your model year. It’s important you find a replacement battery in the right size group, but there are other factors that go into choosing the best battery for your Enclave, too.

How big is a Buick Enclave’s battery?

Engineers designing modern cars try to make the most out of every bit of space available to them in an engine bay, so your Buick Enclave’s battery size matters a lot
The physical dimensions of the battery, which are summed by its “group size,” are the first and most important numbers to consider here.
Battery group sizes (also known as group codes) refer to the general sizes of car batteries and the locations of their terminals. This system was created by the Battery Council International (BCI), a trade group that not only brought uniformity to battery sizes, but also helped make batteries and their production safer. (Thanks!)
For 2017 Buick Enclaves and earlier, the battery dimensions are 12 1/16” L x 6 7/8" W x 7 9/16” H. That means these Enclaves arein the H6 group size.
Model years 2018 to 2023 have slightly larger batteries, in the H7 group size. These batteries are 12 2/8” L x 6 7/8" W x 7 1/2" H. Comparing those sets of dimensions really shows you just how accurate these measurements and the battery group codes need to be!

Other Buick Enclave battery specifications

Your Buick Enclave battery size isn’t the only specification that matters when shopping for batteries. You also need to look at cold cranking amps (CCA), cranking amps (CA), minimum reserve capacity (RC or MRC), and the type of car battery it is (we’ll talk about battery types soon).
This can all get overly technical really quickly, so let’s try and keep this simple. Cranking amps are a measure of how many amps the battery can dish up at zero degrees Celsius (or 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Cold cranking amps measure the same, but at -18 degrees Celsius (a little over zero degrees Fahrenheit).
The colder the outside temperature is, the harder your car has to work to start up. So having a battery with a higher CCA rating means your engine will have an easier time starting in those post-pumpkin-spice months. It also means the battery should last a bit longer, too.
Minimum reserve capacity tells you how many minutes the battery can keep the vehicle running after an alternator failure. But there’s a pretty big asterisk next to this number.
This is a measure of a perfectly new battery in an 80 degrees Fahrenheit environment—and it doesn’t consider that you might have seat heaters and the car radio going while passengers charge their phones. As a rule, higher is better, but you shouldn’t rely on this number in the event of something like an alternator issue.

What type of car battery does the Buick Enclave use?

Car batteries don’t just come in different sizes, but different styles, too. There are two general types: wet cell (also known as flooded cell) batteries are the older style, while VRLA (valve regulated lead-acid) batteries are found in many newer cars, including your Buick Enclave.
Your Buick Enclave uses a VRLA-type battery, specifically an absorbed glass mat, or AGM, battery. AGM batteries last longer, recharge faster, and can’t spill like a wet cell battery can. They’re used in modern cars with more going on electronically than the cars of yesteryear.
So let’s sum everything up and look at a quick battery shopping review:
  • Buick Enclaves built before 2018 are in the H6 battery group
  • 2018 to 2023 Buick Enclaves are in the H7 battery group
  • Make sure it’s an AGM battery
  • Higher cold cranking amps (CCA) make for a better battery
  • Having a higher minimum reserve capacity (MRC or RC) is better
