BMW 330i engine oil capacity

The BMW 330i’s oil capacity is 5.6 quarts of fully synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-40 motor oil.
However, the grade most used in BMW engines tends to be the SAE 5W-30. Keep in mind also that BMW does not recommend adding any oil additives.

What kind of oil does a  BMW 330i need?

As a luxury car with a finely-engineered, high-performance engine, the BMW 330i takes fully synthetic oil. The BMW engineers designed the 330i’s engine around the superior protection offered by synthetic oils, and using conventional oil could damage your engine.
While there are plenty of options on the market, here is a list of recommended oil brands:

How often to change oil on a  BMW 330i

It used to be that most car owners changed their oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Now, the rule of thumb is 7,5000 to 10,000 oil. (And it’s even likely your 330i’s owner’s manual recommends changing the oil every 15,000 miles!)
If you want to play it safe, change your oil about every 5,000 miles, particularly if your 330i has more than 75,000 miles. In that case, be sure to use high-mileage synthetic oil.
In addition to committing to a regular oil change schedule, you should also make it a practice to regularly check your oil condition and oil levels. Many experts recommend checking your oil about once a month. Here are some signs it’s time for an oil change:
  • Black or dark brown oil
  • Gritty feeling or coarse oil
  • A burning smell

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’re contemplating a DIY oil change, be sure that you have the
essential supplies
listed below:
  • To protect your car and garage floor from oil stains, assemble the following: paper towels; cardboard; a plastic bag to put the old filter in
  • Rhino ramps or a jack and wheel chocks to lift the front end and secure your 330i
  • 5.6 quarts of 5W-30 fully synthetic oil
  • The correct BMW 330i oil filter with O-rings (search using your model year and trim level)
  • Oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter and flathead screwdriver
  • Oil funnel to pour in the new oil
  • The correctly-sized ratchet to unscrew the drain plug
  • A new crush washer for re-installing the drain plug
  • A plastic or aluminum drain pan to collect the used oil
Start by finding a level area to park your 330i. If the engine is cold, allow your BMW to run for around 5 minutes so that the oil will drain more smoothly into the drain pan. Then, follow these steps:
  • After the engine has warmed up, pull up on the plastic wheel ramps and then put the car in park, with the emergency brake on. Shut off the engine. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels
  • If you don’t have wheel ramps, jack up the car after shutting off the engine. Again, be sure to secure the back wheels with wheel chocks and set the emergency brake
  • Use the cardboard to help you slide underneath your car. After locating the protective flap covering the drain plug, use a flathead screwdriver to pop off the flap
  • Place the oil collection plan directly beneath the drain plug
  • Unscrew the drain plug with the ratchet. The oil should begin draining. Allow it to fully drain, which may take up to 10-15 minutes
  • When the oil is fully drained, replace the drain bolt using a new crush washer. Tighten to the torque spec. Then replace the protective flap
  • Now, turn your attention to the engine area. Locate the oil filter and place some paper towels around the area to mop up any spills. Also, ready your plastic page
  • Remove the old oil filter (be sure to unscrew it from the oil filter cap!) and place it into the bag
  • Install the new oil filter and O-rings. Clean off any excess oil on the oil cap
Before cleaning up, start your 330i, allowing it to run for a few minutes. Inspect the area underneath your car, looking for leaks. Then, using the dipstick, check your oil level. If you need a bit more oil, pour some in.
Dispose of your used oil correctly. Pouring oil into the ground creates environmental pollution, and throwing it out with the regular trash creates a hazard for others. Fortunately, most states require that garages and oil retailers must accept used motor oil. Call around to find one.
