Keeping your car’s tires properly pressurized is important for your safety and for your vehicle’s performance. Low tire pressure can negatively impact your steering ability as well as your car’s fuel efficiency. Worse yet, improperly inflated tires are at a higher risk of a blowout.

What is the right tire pressure for a BMW 328i?

The correct tire pressure for your BMW 328i tires depends on what tires your particular model is outfitted with. 2016 base models were available with three possible set-ups. Here’s a look at those set-ups and their respective tire pressure specs:
  • 225/50R17 (all four tires): 32 psi
  • 225/45R18 (all four tires): 32 psi front, 36 psi rear
  • 225/45R18 (front): 32 psi
  • 225/40R18 (rear): 32 psi
Although you may find a psi written on the side of your tires, that is only the maximum psi that your tire should be inflated to. The inflation specs for your particular BMW can be found in your vehicle’s owner manual or on the sticker located in your driver’s side door jamb.
If you have added high-performance tires or made any modifications, be sure to familiarize yourself with the specifications of your particular tires.

How to check BMW 328i tire pressure

The 2016 BMW 328i Sedan comes with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), or Flat Tire Monitoring system, which sends an alert to your instrument cluster when any of your tires begin to lose pressure. The 328i’s TPMS has individual tire pressure monitoring, indicating specifically which tire is losing pressure.
If your 328i isn’t quite so space-aged, you can check your tire pressure yourself with
a tire pressure gauge
. The gauge will tell you what psi your tires are at, then all you have to do is put air in your tire until your tire’s air pressure meets your car’s specifications.
If you don’t have a tire pressure gauge, there are other ways to tell if your tires are running low on air. Decreased fuel efficiency, poor steering, and an uneven ride are all symptoms of low tire pressure. If you’re experiencing any of these issues, take your car to your local filling station—they’ll have a tire pressure gauge and an air compressor that you can use to get your tires back to spec.
Some tires are filled with nitrogen instead of regular air, but don’t worry—it is completely safe to add air to tires filled with nitrogen.

How often should you check tire pressure?

The best practice is to check your tire pressure monthly or before heading out on any long trips.

How to tell if your BMW 328i needs new tires

Conventional wisdom holds that you should replace your tires every six years or so. However, you may need to change them earlier if they’re showing signs of wear, like low tread depth or cracking and bulging.
Not sure if your tire treads are worn out? Here’s a trick to check your tire’s tread depth: insert an American penny into the tire tread with the top of President Lincoln’s head pointing toward the center of your wheel. If the Great Emancipator’s head is fully visible, it’s time to think about getting some new rubber for your ride.

How to reset the BMW 328i tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Once you’ve inflated your tires to specifications you may need to
reset your TPMS
—also known as the Flat Tire Monitor system—if the tire pressure warning light does not go out. Here’s what to do.
First, turn on your car and select “Vehicle info” on your 328i’s infotainment system menu, then select “Vehicle status”. Once you are at the vehicle status screen, select FTM reset, start your engine, and select “Perform reset”.
Once you’ve performed the reset, don’t shut off your car. The reset is completed while driving, so take a short drive to your local pie store or roller rink to complete the process.
