Audi A4 engine oil capacity

Your Audi A4 has a two-liter four-cylinder engine that holds 5.5 quarts or 5.2 liters of motor oil.
Remember to note the difference between your
engine's displacement
—the two-liter volume of space occupied by the pistons in its cylinders—and its oil capacity, which is the amount of oil the engine can hold and use as a lubricant.
Capacity and displacement are two completely different numbers that should never be used interchangeably.

What kind of oil does an Audi A4 need?

Knowing how much hold your Audi holds is important information, but you also need to know the type of oil it takes. That's right; there is a wide range of available engine oils, and you can't just put any of them into your engine.
When you go to the auto parts store, look for SAE 5W-40. That's the oil Audi recommends using in your A4, and you can't go wrong purchasing the manufacturer's recommendation.
That might look like some kind of cryptic code, but each character actually has a pretty simple meaning.
The "SAE" stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the group that writes these engine oil codes. And the numbers represent the oil's viscosity or thickness.
The "5" shows how thick the oil is when the engine is cold—this is the reason it's next to the "W," which means winter—and the "40" represents the oil's viscosity at warm temperatures.
You can identify the thickness of oils by looking at their numbers. Smaller numbers mean the oil is thinner, and thinner oils move through your engine more efficiently.
If you're still confused about which oil to buy, consider these three quality options:

How often to change the oil on an Audi A4

Audi encourages you to change the oil in your A4 every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you rarely drive your car, you might be better off remembering to change the oil every six months
But because you might go six months in between oil changes, it's important to regularly check the oil to ensure it's in good condition and the level is healthy. A useful habit to develop is checking your oil every other time you fill up at the gas pump. But no matter how you remember to do it, you should check your oil at least once a month.
When checking your oil, look for these signs that it needs to be replaced:
  • Dark brown, black, or muddy-looking oil (clean oil looks like dark, amber-colored honey)
  • Oil with grimy, sandy, or gritty texture
  • Bad smells, like oil, burning, or smoke, coming from the engine
  • Less power from the engine
  • The engine is making strange new sounds

How to change your oil and oil filter

When you have the correct amount and type of oil, you're ready to get started changing it. These are the tools you'll need:
  • Jack stands and a jack or ramps to lift the car
  • A ratchet wrench with a 19-millimeter socket
  • An oil filter wrench
  • A torque wrench
  • A funnel
  • A drain pan
  • A rag or towel
Before you start, turn on your Audi and let it run for five minutes. This isn't necessary, but doing so will warm the oil enough to drain more quickly. When the engine is warm, it's time to begin.
Step 1: Remove the oil fill cap and pull out the dipstick.
Step 2: Remove the oil drain plug by going under the car. Use the drain pan to catch the oil and keep the mess to a minimum.
Step 3: Take off the old oil filter while the oil drains.
Step 4: Put a thin layer of oil on the new filter's gasket with your finger before screwing it in. Make sure to only tighten the new filter until it fits tightly.
Step 5: Put the drain plug back in place and tighten it to 22 lb-ft.
Step 6: Use your funnel to add new oil to the engine, and then put the oil fill cap back on.
After you've done these things, turn on your A4 and let the engine run for 30 seconds. Then, turn off the car and use the dipstick to check the oil level. If the oil needs to be topped off, do so. Then, make sure the fill cap and dipstick are in place.
Don't forget to get rid of your old oil properly. You can do this by pouring it into the new oil container and taking it back to the store where you bought the new oil.
