Ford 6.7L engine oil capacity

So just how much oil does your 6.7 diesel engine need?
The Ford 6.7 liter diesel engine needs 15 quarts (or around 14.2 liters) of engine oil. Be sure not to mix up the engine’s displacement (the 6.7 liters of volume its cylinders take up) with its engine oil capacity, which is how much oil you need for every oil change. The two numbers aren’t interchangeable, and putting the wrong amount of oil in your engine could cause damage.

What kind of oil does a Ford 6.7 engine need?

Now that you know how much oil your Ford 6.7 engine needs, you’ll need to get the right kind. You’ll need to buy 15 quarts worth of oil, so double-check before you make a purchase! While you have some choices as far as oil grade goes, you need to make sure the oil you choose is for diesel engines.
All engines have mechanical parts that need lubrication from oil, but diesel engines require engine oil with specific additives that help keep the engine clean and cut down on harmful exhaust emissions.
For Ford’s exact recommendation, use
Motorcraft® SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil

How often to change oil on a Ford 6.7L engine

Now that you’ve chosen your oil and gotten 15 quarts, you’re ready to change your oil.
Ford recommends changing the oil in your 6.7L engine every 10,000 miles. This is only if you’ve been using a high-quality synthetic oil. Conventional oils will only last between 3,000 and 6,000 miles between oil changes before they get dirty and start gunking up your engine.
Even though synthetic oil is great at keeping your engine clean, 10,000 miles is still a long time to wait between oil changes. It’s important that you keep an eye on your oil levels by checking them with your dipstick regularly and watch out for any of the following signs that you need an oil change:
  • Motor oil is dark brown or black—clean oil is very light brown
  • Oil feels coarse or gritty if you rub it between your fingers
  • You hear unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • Any new oily, smokey, or burning smells
  • Any change to your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When your 6.7L engine is ready for an oil change, you’ll want to gather up a few tools for the job. Besides your 15 quarts of new oil and a replacement filter, you’ll also need a socket wrench, drain pan, and filter wrench.
You’ll want to run your engine for a few minutes until it reaches its normal operating temperature. This will warm up the oil and make it easier to drain. Once the engine is warm, shut it off and pop the hood. Then follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Position the drain pan under the vehicle, then remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • While the oil is draining, remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • When the oil is completely drained, replace the oil drain bolt
  • Refill the reservoir with new engine oil and replace the fill cap
You can use your dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough oil to the engine. Then you’ll want to run your engine for a few minutes to let the oil pressure light shut off and to watch for any leaks.
When you’re ready to get rid of the old engine oil, make sure you pour it into a sealed container and take it to a recycling facility. Don’t dump old oil on the ground or throw it in the trash can!
