2021 Toyota Tundra 5.7 engine oil capacity

The 2021 Tundra’s 5.7-liter V8 engine has an oil capacity of 8.5 quarts. The 5.7-liter volume in the engine spec is its displacement—the volume that its eight cylinders take up. This isn’t the same thing as the engine’s oil capacity, which is the amount of oil required for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2021 Toyota Tundra 5.7 need?

Toyota recommends Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil for the 2021 Tundra 5.7.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil’s viscosity, or how thick it is, and the “W” stands for winter. The number 0 right before “W” tells us that this oil’s got a low viscosity in very cold temperatures, while the number 20 means that it’s also relatively thin in hot weather as well.
Basically, this oil’s low viscosity means that it performs well in cold weather.
Pro Tip The 2021 Tundra’s manual states that if you can’t find 0W-20, you can use 5W-20—but it must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next change.
Toyota says that you can use a high-quality synthetic oil blend in your Tundra as long as it meets the same requirements. If you can’t find the Toyota brand, don’t worry. As long as it’s a premium grade 0W-20 weight and has the American Petroleum Institute’s seal of approval, it should be fine.

How often to change the oil on a 2021 Toyota Tundra 5.7

According to Toyota, you should change the oil in your Tundra every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you don’t drive a lot, then every six months is a good rule of thumb. There are some sources who report that you can go as long as 10,000 miles before an oil change if you use synthetic oil, but in this case, it’s best to stick with what Toyota says.
To make sure you’re changing the oil at the right time, check your oil levelon a regular basis — once a month or every other refuel is a good time frame. Watch for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Color: motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a dark cup of soda.)
  • Motor oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you’ve learned how much and what kind, it’s time to
change your oil
! You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. Remember to buy a replacement filter and 8.5 quarts of premium 0W-20 engine oil
Begin by running the engine for a few minutesto warm it up. Turn off the truck, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back down through the engine, and carefully pop the hood. Be very careful as some parts of the engine may be hot, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Use your dipstick to make sure that you’ve added enough oil to the engine—but make sure you don’t overfill it!  After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’re done and have tightened everything back up, run your truck for a few minutes and monitor for any leaks.
Last but not least comes the cleanup. Never dump the dirty oil out on the ground or put it in your garbage bin. Place it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center. Many auto parts stores will also accept used motor oil, and some curbside garbage haulers will accept used oil if it is in a proper container and placed next to the bin. Check the regulations in your area to see what your options are.
