So, how much engine oil does a 2020 Honda CR-V need?
A 2020 Honda CR-V has a 1.5-L four-cylinder engine with an oil capacity of 3.7 quarts—or 3.5 liters. Now you may be wondering about that “1.5-L” engine part. Why would the oil capacity be 3.5 liters?
These are two different numbers: the “1.5-L’ refers to displacement, not oil capacity. It’s important not to mix these numbers up because they are not interchangeable. A 2020 Honda CR-V’s oil capacity is 3.5 liters—1.5 liters is its engine displacement.
What kind of oil does a 2020 Honda CR-V need?
We’ve established the amount of oil your CR-V needs. Now we need to determine the oil type. Don’t grab the closest five-quart bottle of engine oil you see in the store—each vehicle requires a unique type of oil. For a 2020 Honda CR-V, you need 0W-20 engine oil.
So what do these letters and numbers mean? The number is the oil’s thickness (also known as viscosity), and the “W” means winter. For 0W-20, the 0W tells us the oil is proportionately thin at a low temperature, which improves efficiency during a cold start. The 20 tells us the oil remains thin at high temperatures like 212ºF, which also increases efficiency.
This type of oil performs well in cold weather and lessens wear and tear on your car
engine thanks to its higher viscosity. You can also buy synthetic oil if you prefer, but make sure you’re using the same type of oil for each oil change.
How often to change the oil on a 2020 Honda CR-V
Now that you’ve got the basics covered, the moment of truth: changing your oil
. The first step is to figure out the mileage
you’ve driven since your previous oil change. This helps you avoid wasting oil and money by changing your oil too soon. A Honda routine car maintenance schedule
recommends an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Don’t drive a lot? Follow a six-month schedule for your oil changes to keep it in tip-top shape. If you drive a lot or just want to add more miles in between each oil change, you can use synthetic oil. Synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Whatever oil you choose, check it once a month or every other refuel for signs that it’s time to change your oil:
Your oil should be light brown or amber. A dark brown or black color means the oil is dirty.
Is that a tasty cup of Coke? Nope, it’s dirty oil even though it looks like soda.
What’s that sound? Unfamiliar or loud engine noises
could mean it's time for an oil change. Phew, something stinks! The smell of oil, smoke, or burning means it’s time for a change.
If your CR-V has had performance changes, it could be time.
How to change your oil and oil filter
You’ve racked up enough miles or time to warrant changing your oil, so head to the store for the proper materials. This includes a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, are placement filter, and at least four quarts of 0W-20 engine oil.
Let your engine run for around five minutes until it reaches its regular operating temperature. Once it’s warm enough, turn the engine off, open the hood
, and follow these steps: Find the oil fill cap and take it off
Get under the car and take out the oil drain bolt and washer, placing the drain pan below to catch the emptying oil
Remove the old oil filter and let the oil continue draining
Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
Add the correct amount of new oil and replace the fill cap
Check that you’ve added enough oil by using your dipstick. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
If you’re finished, run the engine for a short while and watch out for leaks. Your oil pressure light
will turn off if you’re successful. Finally, it’s time to clean up. Whatever you do, don’t pour the old oil onto the ground or throw it away. You need to place it in a sealed container and drop it off at a recycling center.
Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance
Now that you’re equipped with your 2020 Honda CR-V’s oil capacity, you’re an engine maintenance expert! What about your Honda CR-V car insurance rate though? Maintaining your policy is just as crucial as saving time on an oil change
and cutting back on the cost of an oil change. Don’t worry, it’s easier to maintain your policy than it is to change your oil when you use the Jerry
