2019 Honda Pilot engine oil capacity

So let’s get to it: How much oil does a 2019 Honda Pilot need?
The 280 horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine that lives under the hood of your 2019 Pilot has an oil capacity of 5.4 quarts. The “3.5-liter” spec of the engine is its displacement, or the volume that the six cylinders take up. This isn’t the same thing as the engine's oil capacity, so make sure not to assume those figures are interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Honda Pilot need?

If you’ve ever been down the oil aisle in an auto parts store, you’ll know that there’s an incredibly large selection of engine oils to choose from, and they’re not all the same. You don't want to just grab any random bottle though—using the wrong kind of oil can potentially ruin an engine. For the 2019 Pilot, Honda recommends genuine Honda premium grade 0W-20 detergent oil with the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal on the bottle.
The numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity (how thick it is), and the “W” stands for winter. The zero before the W means that this particular oil has a low viscosity in cold weather. The 20 means that it will also stay thin when temperatures are on the high side.
In plain English, this means that the oil will do well in cold weather conditions, as the low viscosity means it will keep flowing nicely and prevent wear and tear on your engine. A detergent oil has some additives in it to prevent sludge and rust from building up in your engine, and the API is a national trade group that represents the gas and oil industry.
The Pilot’s owner’s manual states that synthetic oil is fine, as long as it’s premium quality, has the API seal, and is the proper grade.
Here are a few options to consider:

How often to change oil on a 2019 Honda Pilot

Okay! We know how much, we know what kind—now how often do you need to change your oil, exactly?
Honda recommends that you change the oil in your Pilot every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you don’t put a lot of miles on your car, then every six months is a good guideline.
But every engine is different so, check your oil levelon a regular basis—every other refuel is a good rule of thumb. Watch for these indicators that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Dirty motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black in color, while clean oil is light brown or amber
  • Motor oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Enough talk! It’s time to do this thing. Once you’ve decided that it’s time for an
oil change
, you’ll need to gather a few
essential car tools and supplies
. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. A few shop rags are always a good thing to have when you’re working on your car, as things tend to get dirty fast.
Don’t forget to buy a replacement oil filter and at least 5.4 quarts of premium 0W-20 engine oil
Run your Pilot for a few minutes until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off. Wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back through the engine, then open the hood and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap.
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old oil filter, and continue to let the oil drain.
  • Install the new filter.
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer, and tighten it to 29 lb-ft.
  • Refill the engine with your new oil, and replace the fill cap.
Use the dipstick to make sure that you’ve added enough oil, but take care not to overfill it! Tighten everything back up, start the engine, and let it run for a few minutes to monitor for any leaks.
Last but not least: cleanup! Never dump out the dirty on the ground. Pour it down the drain or just toss it in the trash can.
Some garbage haulers will accept used motor oil if it’s in a proper container and placed near the bin, but if this isn’t an option for you, take the old oil to a recycling center.
PRO TIP: Many auto parts stores will accept used motor oil for recycling!

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

Done and done! While your car insurance doesn’t necessarily need changing every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, most experts recommend that you
shop for car insurance every six months
to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
