What kind of oil does a 2019 Honda Odyssey need?
All Odyssey trims come with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that you can use an API-certified premium grade detergent oil to service, as long as it has a 0W-20 rating. Honda also says that synthetic oil can be used as long as it has the same API certification and 0W-20 rating.
Here’s what API-certified 0W-20 means. API stands for American Petroleum Institute, which is the group that certifies oil grades. The 0 is the oil’s cold start viscosity rating and the 20 is the high-temperature viscosity rating.
Detergent oils have additives in them that work to keep engines clean from any deposit and neutralize any acid build-up in the engine oil. It makes it easier for the filtration system to remove any impurities that show up.

How often to change oil on a 2019 Honda Odyssey
The standard window for changing synthetic oil is every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Honda also has a feature where your display will tell you when an oil change is needed—a “Maintenance Due Now” message will appear if the engine oil life is less than 15%.
If this message does not appear in over 12 months after the display is reset, you should change your engine oil every year at maximum.
On top of scheduled maintenance, you should be checking on your engine oil level and appearance regularly (Honda suggests every time you refuel). It’s easier than you think—just remove your dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it back in the hole again, and remove it once more. If the oil level is between the full and empty marks, you’re good to go.
If the oil is dirty or dark, it’s probably a sign that your oil needs to be changed early. Here are some other signs to change your oil:
- Your check engine oil light is on
- A noticeable drop in fuel efficiency (you’re using more gas than usual for routine trips)
- Consistently stalling or overheating engine
How to change your oil and oil filter
The engine oil and oil filter are critical to maintaining the engine’s lubrication, so you have to change them regularly to avoid damaging it. You will need:
- A wrench for the drain bolt under the car
- A special wrench to remove the oil filter removal wrench—you can buy this from a dealer
- A drain pan
- A new oil filter
Optional are gloves and a funnel to make pouring easier. You’ll also need at least 5.7 quarts of your chosen engine oil, too.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature (about five minutes in normal weather) and then turn it off.
- Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap.
- Position the drain pan under the drain bolt and washer. Remove the bolt and washer to drain the oil into the pan.
- Remove the oil filter and drain the remaining oil into the pan.
- Wipe away any dirt on the engine block and install the new oil filter. Make sure you follow the instructions that came with the new filter to do this properly.
- Put a new washer on the drain bolt and reinstall the drain bolt, tightening it to a 229 lb-ft.
- Pour your new oil into the engine and replace the oil fill cap.
Almost done! Run the engine for a few minutes and check if there are any leaks from the drain bolt or oil filter. Then stop the engine, wait for three minutes, and then check the oil level with your dipstick. Add more oil if necessary.
And that’s all you need to do! Make sure you dump the old oil into a sealed container and drop it off at a recycling center. You should never throw the oil away into a garage can or the ground.
