A 2018 Nissan GT-R has an engine oil capacity of 5.2 quarts, or 5 liters. While that may sound like a lot, your engine needs plenty of lubrication to keep everything running smoothly.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Nissan GT-R need?

Now that we know how much engine oil a 2018 Nissan GT-R needs, let’s talk about oil types.
Different engine oils are made to meet the needs of different cars. It’s crucial to use the right kind of oil for your 2018 Nissan GT-R to get the most out of your engine. The 2018 Nissan GT-R is very picky about its engine oil.
The GT-R’s VR38 engine was specifically designed to use
Mobil 1 0W-40 Full Synthetic oil
.
Oil specifics can be confusing, so let's break down your 2018 Nissan GT-R’s oil rating into simple terms.
Oils are rated for their viscosity at different temperatures. An oil needs to maintain a thin viscosity in order to lubricate your engine properly—so the lower the numbers in an oil’s rating, the better.
The number after the “W” in 0W-40 indicates the oil’s rating at winter temperatures. With a winter rating of 0, we can be sure that this oil performs better in the cold than, say, a 10W-40 oil would.
The number after the W refers to the oil’s ability to withstand the heat of your engine. 40 may seem high for an oil rating, but don’t let that number fool you. The VR38 engine is built to consume oil quicker than a lower-performance engine, making its heat rating less important.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Nissan GT-R

Now that you’re an expert on your 2018 Nissan GT-R’s engine oil needs, you're ready to
change the oil and filter
in your sports car.
Most cars need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. But the 2018 Nissan GT-R isn’t most cars. The owner’s manual recommends including an oil change in your GT-R's
basic car maintenance schedule
every 1,800 miles, especially if you enjoy high-performance driving.
If you don’t take the GT-R out that often, you should still check your oil level every 6 months. Oil will degrade in your engine over time no matter how often you drive.
It’s important to stay in tune with your car’s needs in case you need to change your oil early. Check your oil if you experience any of the following symptoms in your GT-R:
  • A change in the oil’s color from red to dark brown or black
  • A coarse or gritty texture
  • Unfamiliar noises, like whining or screeching coming from the engine
  • New smells in the car, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • A noticeable change in your car’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Let’s get to it!
First, you’ll need to gather some materials. Grab a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench specifically designed to remove your car’s old oil filter. You’ll also need a new oil filter and a jug of that specialty oil the VR38 engine was built for.
Once you have everything you need, let the engine run for a bit to get it up to operating temperature. In normal weather, this should only take a few minutes.
Once you’re there, turn off the engine,
open the hood of your car
, and follow these simple steps to change the oil in your 2018 Nissan GT-R:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get under the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old oil to drain into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and let the rest of the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
Check the oil level with your dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Let your engine run to check for leaks and watch the
oil pressure light
on your dash. If you’ve done everything right, it should turn off within a few minutes.
The last step is cleanup. Do not dump the old oil on the ground or in a trash can. Instead, seal it tightly in a container and take it to a recycling center to dispose of it.
