2018 Ford Edge oil capacity

Let’s get right into the big question: exactly how much oil should you be putting in your 2018 Ford Edge?
The 2018 Edge’s base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has an oil capacity of 5.7 quarts, or 5.4 liters. Be careful not to confuse your engine’s displacement—the 2.0-liter volume the engine’s cylinders take up—with its oil capacity, which is the actual amount of oil needed for each oil change.
These numbers signify very different properties of your engine, so don’t assume that they are interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Ford Edge need?

Now that you know the oil capacity of a 2018 Ford Edge, you’ll next need to figure out what type of oil to use. There is not one singular type of oil that works for all cars and all engines, so instead of grabbing any old bottle of oil off the shelf, you’ll want to look specifically for Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Premium synthetic Blend Motor Oil per the 2018 Edge’s owner’s manual recommendation.
What does all of that mean? The numbers included in the name (aka the oil grade) refer to its viscosity, or how thick it is. The “W” in the name, on the other hand, stands for winter—with the preceding number 5 telling us that the oil’s viscosity is low at 0°F, while the number 30 refers to the oil’s high-temperature viscosity at a blazing hot 212°F.
Ideally, the perfect oil for your engine will feature these ratings as they’ll allow your Ford Edge to perform well, regardless of the weather conditions. Low oil viscosity also means that there will be less wear and tear on your engine.
Synthetic oil protects your engine by including synthetic additives that reduce friction while simultaneously cleaning the engine of deposits.

How often to change the oil on a 2018 Ford Edge

So now that you’ve got your 5W-30 oil in hand, it’s time to figure out how often you should be
changing the oil
in your 2018 Ford Edge.
Ford recommends changing the oil in the 2018 Edge every 5,000 to 10,000 miles if you’re using the recommended synthetic oil. If you’re not a heavy driver, a good rule of thumb is to get your oil changed at least every six months to make sure your Edge and its engine are running as smoothly as possible.
That said, a lot can happen between mile 5,000 and mile 10,000. To ensure that you're changing your oil at the right time, you should check your oil level on a regular basis—ideally once a month or after every other refuel.
The following symptoms might mean that you need to change your Edge’s oil:
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you notice that your 2018 Ford Edge needs an oil change, you can save money by doing it at home yourself! Here’s what you’ll need: a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench for removing the old oil filter.
Of course, you’ll also need 6 quarts of your preferred SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil and a replacement oil filter
Ahead of changing the oil, you’ll want to run your Edge’s engine for a while to get the oil up to its normal operating temperature. Assuming that it’s not freezing cold outside, this should only take a few minutes.
Once your car is warmed up, switch off the engine, pop the hood, and get to work following these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine to remove the 15-mm oil drain bolt and oil filter
  • Place your drain pan under the oil drain to catch the old oil—this may take a few minutes
  • Once drained, install your new oil filter
  • Replace the 15-mm oil drain bolt—don’t overtighten!
  • Once the filter and bolt are secure, pour in your SAE 5W-30 motor oil and replace the fill cap
You can use your dipstick to make sure that you’ve poured in enough oil. Once you’ve finished, turn on your Edge’s engine for a few minutes to make sure there aren’t any leaks. If you’ve done everything right, your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
should turn off.
But you’re not quite done! Be sure not to toss your old oil on the ground or into your garbage bin. Instead, pour the old oil into a sealed container and take it to your local recycling center for proper disposal.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
