2018 Dodge Journey engine oil capacity

Your 2018 Dodge Journey will require different amounts of oil depending on the engine that you have.
This SUV is available with two different engine sizes. You can either have a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6L V6 engine. The 2.4L engine requires 4.5 quarts of oil, while the 3.6L engine requires 6 quarts of oil.
Engine displacement and oil capacity are not interchangeable. The liter measurements you see in the description of the engine (2.4 or 3.6 liters) represent the displacement of the engine.
If you’re unsure of your Dodge Journey’s engine size, you can check your owner’s manual. And from there, you can find out the oil capacity of your engine.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Dodge Journey need?

The amount of oil differs for the two different engines in a 2018 Dodge Journey, but does the type of oil differ? Nope.
Both the 2.4L and the 3.6L engines require SAE 5W-20, API Certified engine oil, and Dodge recommends using oil from Mopar, Shell Helix, or Pennzoil.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Dodge Journey

Now you know how much oil you’ll need and what type of oil you’ll need for your 2018 Dodge Journey. The next question: how often should you change your oil?
It’s recommended that you change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. That being said, you also shouldn’t let your oil go without being changed for more than 6 months. Other factors like heavy traffic and heavy towing might also require more frequent oil changes.
You should be checking your oil about once a month, and be sure to check your oil before any long trips, too. When you’re checking it, make sure you have the proper volume of oil, and watch out for signs of poor quality.
Engine oil should be a light brown or amber color, so if your oil is dark brown or black, you’ll want to change it. When you’re checking your oil, note the texture. If the oil looks gritty or coarse, it also means that you’re going to need to change out that oil.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now let’s get on to how to change your oil. The process can be pretty simple if you have the know-how and the proper tools. First, you’ll need to make sure that you have a new oil filter and the appropriate amount of oil depending on the engine size of your Journey. You’ll also need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench.
If you choose to lift your Journey to have better access to the undercarriage, be sure that you never get under a vehicle that is only supported by a jack. You’ll also want to run the vehicle before lifting it to get it to normal running temperature. This usually only takes about five minutes or so.
Once that’s done, pop the hood and remove the oil fill cap. Then get under your SUV and place the drain pan so that it can catch the oil that you’ll be draining. Make sure that the drain pan you choose can hold all of the oil that will be coming out of your Dodge. Then, using the socket wrench, remove the oil drain bolt, but you may want to complete the task with your hands so that the bolt is less likely to end up in the drain pan with all of the old oil.
As the oil is draining, remove the old oil filter. Once all of the oil is drained, attach the new oil filter and replace the oil drain bolt. Once the bolt is tightened, you can fill the engine back up with fresh oil making sure there are no leaks. Run your Journey for about a minute and then check the dipstick to make sure the oil is at the right level.
The final step is to dispose of the used engine oil. You need to do this properly by placing it in a sealed container and bringing it to the appropriate recycling facility. Never put used oil down the drain or pour it on the ground.
