2017 Ford Transit 3.2 Diesel engine oil capacity

So, what’s the engine oil capacity for a 2017 Ford Transit 3.2 Diesel? We’re glad you asked—the Ford Transit Van’s oil capacity is 5.9 quarts.
Be sure to not mix up your engine’s oil capacity—or the amount of oil needed for every oil change—and its
engine displacement
, aka how much volume (3.2 liters) the engine’s cylinders take up.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Ford Transit 3.2 Diesel need?

Now you know how much oil the Transit Van takes for a full
oil and filter change
, but what kind of oil does it take? We’ve got you covered here, too.
You’ll only want to pour Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil down the ‘17 Transit Van’s gullet. That’s Ford’s recommendation for this van—stick with the manufacturer’s recommendation whenever possible.
So, what do all those numbers mean? They refer to the oil’s viscosity, or how thick or thin it is. The 5 in 5W means it is less thick at low temperatures, while the 30 means it is also less thick (or viscous) at really hot temperatures. The W stands for winter.
This kind of oil is ideal for winter driving, as it will perform well even at very low temperatures. The fact that its viscosity level (thickness) is low means it will cause less wear and tear on your engine over time.
If you can’t find Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil for your Transit Van, don’t despair. There are alternatives you can use—just make sure you're using synthetic rather than conventional oil.
The following motor oils will suit your Transit Van well:
  • Kendall SHP Diesel 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
  • Castrol Edge Extended Performance 5W-20 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Ford Transit 3.2 Diesel

Next, it's time to figure out how often to change your oil (in case you didn’t already know).
Ford recommends changing your van’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. If you drive infrequently, changing your oil every six months might be a better benchmark to ensure you keep your engine running smoothly.
That being said, it's good to get into the habit of checking your oil regularly—roughly once a month or every time you refuel. The following signs are indicators that your oil needs to be changed:
  • You hear strange and/or unfamiliar sounds coming from your engine
  • You smell oil, burning, or smoke
  • You notice changes in how your vehicle performs

How to change your oil and oil filter

To change your oil, you’re going to need to gather some materials to get the job done. You’ll need a filter wrench to remove the existing filter, a drain pan, and a socket wrench. You’ll also need a replacement filter and 6 quarts of full synthetic oil.
To start, run your engine for a few minutes in order to get it up to operating temperature. In normal weather, this should take 5 minutes or less. At this point, turn your engine off, open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Slide underneath the engine, remove the oil drain bolt and washer, and drain the oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the oil filter while letting the oil drain
  • Install new filter
  • With a new washer, replace the oil drain bolt, tightening it to 29 lb-ft
  • With new oil, refill the engine and replace the fill cap
Use your dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough oil. Once you’re finished, run the engine for a few minutes and keep an eye out for any leaks. If everything has been done correctly, your
oil pressure light
should be off.
Don’t forget to clean up—place the old oil in a sealed container and bring it to your nearest recycling center. Don’t pour old oil on the ground or into the garbage.
