2017 Ford Escape engine oil capacity

You may be wondering, don’t all Ford Escape models have the same engine oil capacity? Though that would make things easier, engine oil capacities differ depending on the year of your Ford and its engine configuration.
A 2017 Ford Escape with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine has an oil capacity of 5.7 quarts, or 5.4 liters. Remember not to confuse the engine oil capacity with engine displacement—these values are not the same thing!
The engine displacement refers to the volume the cylinders take up in the engine. For a 2017 Ford Escape, the engine displacement is 2.5 liters. In contrast, engine oil capacity is the amount of oil needed for an oil change (again, 5.4 liters).

What kind of oil does a 2017 Ford Escape need?

A 2017 Ford Escape uses 5W-20 synthetic blend motor oil. Let’s break down what that means:
  • The numbers in the oil weight code refer to the minimum and maximum temperatures where the oil retains its viscosity (thickness). In the case of 2017 Ford Escape oil, the viscosity is stable at 0°F (indicated by the “5”), and temperatures up to 212°F (indicted by the “20”)
  • “W” stands for winter, meaning that the engine oil can perform in cold climates
Though these ratings can be confusing, you need to make sure you use the correct oil grade to keep your vehicle performing its best.
What about synthetic oil? “Synthetic” simply means that the solution is blended with other additives to prevent rust, buildup, oil deterioration, and other engine problems. You can normally opt for a synthetic oil over conventional oil as long as it has the same specifications.
When you visit a hardware store or auto shop, you’ll likely find aisles of different engine oils. Ford recommends the use of
Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Ford Escape

Now that you know the ins and outs of your 2017 Ford Escape oil capacity, it’s time for an
oil and filter change
Ford recommends changing the engine oil in your 2017 Escape every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of its
basic car maintenance schedule
Though it’s handy to have this range in mind, there is a significant difference between these numbers. How do you determine the precise moment to change the oil? The pros recommend checking your oil level regularly, whether that’s once a month or every other refuel.
It’s also good to keep an eye out for these telltale signs of dirty engine oil:
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • Unfamiliar oil, smoke, or burning smells
  • Worsening performance of your car

How to change your oil and oil filter

If the time has come for an oil change, don’t hesitate to tackle this maintenance task yourself! All you need to do is make sure you have the right materials within your arm's reach to set yourself up for success.
For this task, you need a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, replacement oil filter, and 4.3 quarts of a 5W-20 synthetic blend motor oil.
Begin by running the engine for five minutes or so to warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Once the engine reaches this optimal temperature, shut the engine off and open the hood of your car.
Then, follow these steps to change your 2017 Ford Escape engine oil:
  • Unscrew and remove the oil fill cap
  • Crawl underneath the engine and position the drain pan directly under the oil drain
  • Using your socket wrench, remove the oil drain bolt and washer. Let the old oil drain into the drain pan
  • Grab the filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Let the oil continue draining into the pan
  • Install the new engine oil filter
  • Reinstall the oil drain bolt and secure it with a new washer—make sure the bolt is tightened to 29 ft-lb
  • Now, stand back up to access the top of the engine. Pour the new oil into the engine, filling it to the correct engine oil capacity
  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level. Once it’s reached the oil capacity level, reinstall the oil fill cap and close the car’s hood
  • Double-check your work by running the engine for a few minutes. Look for any oil leaks and make sure the dashboard’s
    oil pressure light
    turns off
Now that you’re done, make sure to safely dispose of the dirty engine oil. Pour the old oil into a sealable container and drop it off at a local recycling center. Do not dump the dirty oil on the ground or into a garbage can.
Changing the oil shouldn't take long
, but it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

Regular oil changes are an essential part of keeping your 2017 Ford Escape in clean, working condition. Another easy (but often ignored) task is checking on your car insurance policy regularly.
