The 2017 Ford Edge is one of Ford’s most popular models: a roomy SUV with excellent fuel economy and a lower five-year projected ownership cost than any of its rivals. But to keep costs low and to keep this affordable midsize SUV in top form, you will need to know its oil capacity.

Owning the 2017 Ford Edge comes with a lot of perks. It’s spacious but won’t soak up as much space in your garage as an Explorer. It also has a high fuel economy that will keep gas costs low. You can keep costs even lower by changing the oil at home—just consult the owner’s manual to ensure that the correct oil type and capacity for your model is being used.

If you’re too busy to search the manual or just want more information on the 2017 Ford Edge engine oil capacity, then look no further.

2017 Ford Edge engine oil capacity

For starters let’s get to the essentials: how much engine oil does a 2017 Ford Edge need?
The powerful, twin-turbo V6 engine inside the 2017 Ford Edge has an oil capacity of 5.7 quarts, or 5.4 liters. Be careful not to make the easy mistake of confusing your engine’s displacement—the 2-liter volume of space its cylinders occupy—with the Edge’s oil capacity. Oil capacity is the amount of oil required for every oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Ford Edge need?

Knowing how much oil your Edge requires is only half the battle—now we need to find out what type of oil is needed. You heard that correctly. When it comes to oil, engines have a type!
To keep your car running and to keep costs down, it's important to know the manufacturer’s recommended motor oil. For the 2017 Edge, Ford recommends the SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil.

Let’s break down what that long-winded oil description means!

The “W” stands for winter and the 5 refers to the oil’s winter viscosity (thickness) grade. In this case, the grade is 5 which means it is less thick at lower “winter” temperatures as opposed to a grade of something like 15W-30. The 30 refers to the oil’s viscosity grade at normal operating temperatures.

So basically, what the Ford Edge needs is a motor oil that’s thin enough to flow at lower temperatures and thick enough to work properly at higher temperatures.

As for the oil’s full synthetic quality, that just means the chemically-enhanced oil entering your car is formulated to combat sludge and any buildup of deposit.

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Ford Edge

Now that we know the oil capacity and type for the 2017 Ford Edge, it’s time to know when to
change your oil
Ford recommends that if you are using conventional oil, you should be sure to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you’re using synthetic oil, they recommend changing the oil every7,500 to 10,000 miles

It’s tough to know how often to change the oil in your car, especially when you have mileage recommendations that really run the gamut! For that reason, it’s vital to check your oil level on a regular basis (every time you refuel or at least once a month) in order to make sure you’re changing your oil at the right time.
Keep an eye out for the following signs that your oil needs changing:
  • Your motor oil is black or dark brown (clean oil has a light brown shade)
  • Your motor oil has a coarse or gritty texture
  • The engine makes unfamiliar noises
  • You notice changes in your vehicle’s performance
  • You notice new smells, specifically oil, smoke, or burning

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it’s time to change your Edge’s oil, first things first: gather your gear!

For tools, you will need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. As for materials, you will obviously need six quarts of the recommended 5W-30 engine oil, but you will also need a replacement filter.

The first step is to run the engine long enough for the vehicle to reach normal operating temperature. This should take no longer than five minutes in normal weather.

After that, shut off the engine, pop the hood and let’s get to it!
  • First, remove the oil fill cap.
  • Then, go beneath the engine, remove the skid plate, remove the oil drain plug, and allow the old oil to flow into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old oil filter and allow the oil to drain completely.
  • Once that is done, lubricate the new filter (using oil) and install it.
  • Put the oil drain plug back on and make sure it is snug.
  • Re-insert the skid plate.
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap

Use your dipstick to make sure that you’ve added enough oil to the engine. Once you’re finished, start the engine for a few minutes and keep an eye out for any leaks. The
oil pressure light
should turn itself off if the oil has been changed correctly.

Now for cleanup! The dirty oil from your car does not belong in the garbage or on the ground. It belongs at your local recycling center in a sealed container
