2016 Jeep Patriot engine oil capacity

How much oil does a 2016 Jeep Patriot need? Both engine options—the 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder—have an oil capacity of 4.5 quarts or 4.3 liters
Now, an engine’s displacement is not the same as its oil capacity. The engine displacement refers to the volume its cylinders take up, which for the 2016 Patriot, is either 2.0 or 2.4 liters, depending on which engine you have. The oil capacity is how much oil you need for an oil change—or 4.5 quarts.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Jeep Patriot need?

Now you know you need 4.5 quarts of oil—but which type of oil? Not all engine oils are suited for your 2016 Jeep Patriot, so you must purchase the right kind. Jeep recommends using SAE 5W-20 with API certification.
The SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, which is the entity that codes your oil’s viscosity. The 5 indicates that the oil maintains a low viscosity at 0°F, where the W stands for “winter.” The 20 means the oil will stay thin at temperatures up to 212°F. Essentially, SAE 5W-20 engine oil will maintain a low viscosity in a wide range of temperatures
When it comes to synthetic oil, Jeep says you can use them as long as they meet all the same requirements. Finally, you can double-check the correct SAE grade for your Patriot on your engine oil filler cap.

How often to change the oil on a 2016 Jeep Patriot

The 2016 Jeep Patriot is equipped with an indicator system that will alert you when it’s time to change your engine oil. This system is duty cycle-based, which means that it takes into account your driving habits when gauging your ideal oil change interval.
For this system to function, you need to reset it after each oil change. If you take your Patriot to a dealership or mechanic for an oil change, they should reset the indicator system for you. Otherwise, you should never wait longer than 10,000 miles, 12 months, or 350 hours of engine run time before you change your oil.
If you’re driving your Patriot off-road, in dusty environments, on very low engine RPMs, or primarily idling, Jeep recommends changing your oil at 4,000 miles.
It’s important to check your oil level regularly to ensure your engine is getting the proper lubrication. Jeep recommends checking your oil after every fuel stop. Here are a few signs it may be time for an oil change:
  • Unfamiliar noises are coming from the engine
  • The oil is dark brown or black or feels coarse or gritty
  • Any changes in your Patriot’s performance
  • New smells, especially smoke, oil, or burning

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it’s time to change your 2016 Jeep Patriot engine oil, the first step is to gather your materials. You’ll need a:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • A replacement filter (Jeep recommends MOPAR)
  • Five quarts of SAE 5W-20 engine oil
Next up, you’ll want to run your engine until it warms up. This should only take five minutes in typical weather. Once it has heated up, turn off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Unscrew your oil fill cap.
  • From under the engine, remove the oil drain bolt and washer, and drain the oil into your drain pan.
  • While the oil drains, take out the old oil filter.
  • Install your new filter.
  • With your new washer, replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft.
  • Refill the engine with your SAE 5W-20 oil and screw on the fill cap.
  • Turn on the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds, allowing the new oil to fill the filter.

From there, you can make sure everything is in tip-top shape by checking your new oil levels with your dipstick and watching for leaks. If everything is in order, the oil pressure light on your dashboard will go off.
The final step is to clean up! Keep in mind that dirty oil cannot be dumped on the ground or put in the trash can. To dispose of it appropriately, put it in a sealed container and drop it off at your local recycling center.
