What kind of oil does a 2016 Honda CR-V need?

Honda's recommended oil for the 2016 Honda CR-V is
Genuine Honda Motor Oil 0W-20
.
0W-20 oil has a thickness (or viscosity) that’s on the thin side. It can handle very cold or very hot environmental temperatures, which is great if you live in an area that has freezing winters and hazy, humid summers.

How often to change the oil on a 2016 Honda CR-V

One benefit of choosing a full synthetic oil for your CR-V is that it performs better and lasts longer in your Honda’s engine than a synthetic blend or conventional oil.
You can go up to 7,5000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oil, but make sure you’re checking your oil regularly (once a month is a good rule of thumb) to make sure it isn’t getting overly dirty or sludgy.
Clean oil will be amber in color, and dirty oil is more like the color of cola. Filthy oil is black and needs to be changed ASAP.
If you check your oil and see that it’s not just dirty but also gritty or sludgy, smell smoke or burning oil, hear a
strange engine noise
, or notice a decrease in your vehicle’s performance, contact a mechanic right away to address these serious maintenance issues so they don’t worsen.

2016 Honda CR-V: how to change the oil

Now that you’re privy to your CR-V’s engine oil type and capacity, let’s get ready to change the oil! To make things as simple as possible, make sure you have all the supplies handy. Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Car jack and jack stands
  • Work gloves
  • 17mm wrench
  • Oil filter wrench or ratchet
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Five quarts of 0W-20 engine oil
  • Oil filter (FRAM PH7317 is the recommended filter type)
Make sure you’ve parked your car on level ground before you position it on the jack stands. You may also want to run your car for a few minutes to warm up the oil beforehand. After that, just follow this series of steps:
  • The oil pan and drain plug are located underneath the vehicle (the oil pan is labeled “engine oil”). Once located, remove the oil drain plug with your 17mm wrench.
  • Let the oil drain into your oil drain pan and manually screw the drain plug back in.
  • Loosen the oil filter with the oil filter wrench or ratchet and remove it by hand. Position your oil drain pan below to catch the oil spillage.
  • Use clean motor oil to lubricate the o-ring of the new oil filter and manually screw it in.
  • Pop the hood and unscrew the motor oil cap Use a funnel to pour your SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil into the engine. Use the measurements on the back of the oil container to keep track of how much you’ve poured in.
Use the dipstick to make sure that the new oil is at the proper level. It’s also a good idea to run the car for a few minutes afterward to ensure there are no leaks.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
After that, reset your oil maintenance light on your dashboard by pressing the start button without your foot on the brake so that all the dash lights illuminate.
Press the oil index button on the dash until you see the oil life indicator on the screen. Hold the button until the lettering on the screen blinks, and then hold it again. This will reset your oil life index back to 100%
