2015 Toyota Highlander engine oil capacity

Before you can begin your do-it-yourself oil change, you need to know how much oil your Toyota Highlander needs—or its engine oil capacity
The 2015 Toyota Highlander 2.7L 4-cylinder engine has an oil capacity of 4.6 quarts or 4.4 liters. The 3.5L V6 engine has an oil capacity of 6.4 quarts, or 6.1 liters. Don’t mix up your engine’s displacement, or the volume of its cylinders, with the oil capacity. If you buy oil based on the engine displacement, you’ll end up with the wrong amount!

What kind of oil does a 2015 Toyota Highlander need?

The next spec you need to know is the type of oil your Toyota Highlander takes. You’ll want 0W-20 full synthetic oil for your Toyota Highlander. Most Toyota vehicles require low viscosity oil, and the 2015 Highlander is no exception.
Low viscosity oil reduces wear on your engine and performs well in cold weather conditions. The “W” indicates winter, and the numbers signify the oil viscosity or how easily the oil flows through the engine in different temperatures. The “0” is the viscosity at cold starting temperatures, while the “20” is your vehicle’s viscosity operating temperature.
Generally speaking, it's best to stick with the recommended brand if there is one. In this case, the owners manual says Toyota Genuine SAE
0W-20 Full Synthetic Oil
is recommended for the 2015 Toyota Highlander.

How often to change oil on a 2015 Toyota Highlander

Toyota recommends that drivers change the oil in their Toyota Highlander every 5,000 miles or six months. To ensure you’re on top of your Highlander’s oil changes, check your oil once a month for contaminants and oil levels.
However, if you notice any of the following, you may need to change your oil sooner:
  • Dirty engine oil that is black like coffee
  • Reduced performance
  • Check engine light or oil pressure light turns on
  • Gritty engine oil
  • Burning smell
  • Dark exhaust
You’ll need to change your engine oil ahead of schedule if your Toyota Highlander is exhibiting any of the symptoms mentioned above.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Grab a socket and filter wrench, a drain pan, a replacement filter, and 4.6 or 6.4 quarts of full synthetic motor oil, and you’re ready to change your Toyota Highlander’s engine oil.
To get started, turn on your Highlander and leave it running to warm the engine, making it easier to drain. Then, follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil cap
  • Unscrew the drain bolt and washer
  • Drain the oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old
    oil filter
before you install the new filter
  • Reconnect the drain bolt and washer
  • Fill the engine with the new motor oil
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
To wrap up your oil change, use your dipstick to check your oil levels and make sure you don’t have leaks. You’ll know you’ve successfully changed your Highlander’s engine oil if the warning lights have turned off.
Pour the old oil into a sealed container and dispose of it at your local recycling center to clean up sustainably.
