2015 Nissan Frontier 4.0 engine oil capacity

The 4.0-liter V6 engine in your 2015 Nissan Frontier takes 5.4 quarts (5.1 liters) of engine oil. This 5.4-quart engine oil capacity is the amount of oil needed every time your car is due for an oil change.
However, the car’s engine oil capacity is not to be confused with the engine displacement. The latter is the 4.0-liters that is taken up by the cylinders in the engine. Remember: engine oil capacity and engine displacement are not interchangeable! Confusing them may result in adding too little, or too much, oil during an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Nissan Frontier need?

The next step in your DIY oil change is deciding what oil to buy. The 2015 Nissan Frontier 4.0-liter V6 takes SAE 5W-30 engine oil
But what does this oil code mean? Let’s take a look:
  • SAE oils meet the quality standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
  • “5” rates the oil’s viscosity (thickness) at 0℉—the lower the number, the better it performs in freezing conditions (know that 0W and 5W are standard among many motor oils)
  • “W” stands for winter
  • “30” rates how well the oil retains it’s viscosity at 212℉ before experiencing a thermal breakdown—the higher the number, the better it performs in boiling conditions (20 or 30 are standard)
Know that engine oils come with different detergent blends designed to fight rust, corrosion, and other engine issues. Sticking with your owner’s manual engine oil recommendation helps reduce any excessive wear and tear. This also means that synthetic oil blends work well for your 2015 Nissan Frontier so long as they have the same premium-grade 5W-30 oil code.

How often to change the oil on a 2015 Nissan Frontier 4.0

The best way to keep your car working for years to come is by following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for a 2015 Nissan Frontier 4.0-liter V6—Nissan recommends doing engine oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to keep your car in optimal condition.
However, this is still a large range. That’s why checking your oil levels on a regular basis is the best way to determine the precise moment when the oil needs to be swapped out. Try making a habit out of checking your oil once a month or every other refuel.
These are some of the signs that your car is due for an
oil change
:
  • Motor oil has turned dark brown or black (compared to the light brown, amber color of clean oil)
  • The oil is noticeably coarse or gritty in texture
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • You notice oil, smoke, or burning smells
  • Decline in your car’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now, that it’s time to change your Nissan Frontier oil at home, make sure you have the right
car tools and supplies
before getting started. You will need a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench (this tool is designed to remove the old oil filter), replacement oil filter, and 5.4 quarts of SAE 5W-30 motor oil
Then, let’s get started! First step is to warm the engine up to normal operating temperature—do this by turning the engine on for 5 minutes or so. Turn the engine off and pop the hood once you’ve reached this optimal temperature.
Here’s what you do next to change your 2015 Nissan Frontier’s engine oil:
  • Unscrew and remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and position the oil drain pan beneath the oil drain
  • Use the socket wrench to remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter with the filter wrench and allow the oil to continue draining into the pan
  • Install the new oil filter
  • Return the oil drain bolt to its spot and use a new washer to tighten the bolt to 29 lb-ft
  • Add the new oil from the top of the engine—check the oil level as you go by using the dipstick to fill the engine to the full Nissan Altima oil capacity (5.3 quarts).
  • Screw and tighten the fill cap back into place
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Almost done! Check your work by closing the hood and turning the engine on to let it run.
Your car's oil pressure light
should turn off. Also, check for leaks when the engine is running—oil leaks may indicate that the oil filter or drain bolt was installed incorrectly.
When you’re satisfied with your work, it’s time to clean up. Never pour dirty oil on the ground or in a garbage bin. Instead, pour it into a sealable container and bring it to your local recycling center. The center will make sure the oil is processed as hazardous waste.
