background
The 2015 Honda Pilot only had one available engine, meaning no matter which trim you have, its engine will have a 4.5-quart oil capacity. The 2015 Pilot’s engine uses synthetic 0W-20 oil.
If you have a Honda Pilot that’s due for an oil change, it may be causing you a bit of anxiety. There can be a lot of unknowns when doing your own car maintenance, but if you ever plan on doing something under the hood—even as simple as doing your own oil change—it’s always a great idea to check your owner’s manual for information on your particular car.

2015 Honda Pilot engine oil capacity

The 2015 Honda Pilot’s 3.5-liter V6 engine has an engine oil capacity of 4.5 quarts.
Oil capacity is measured in quarts, engine displacement is measured in liters, and gasoline is usually measured in gallons, so make sure you’re aware that a 3.5-liter engine will probably not have an engine oil capacity of 3.5 liters, since this designation is referring to the size of the engine.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Honda Pilot need?

Your 2015 Honda Pilot is built to run with synthetic0W-20 motor oil
One thing that does help keep it simple is that no matter which 2020 Honda Civic engine you have, you’ll be using 0W-20 motor oil.
Curious about motor oil names? Well, 0W-20 oil is named based on its viscosity index at different ends of a temperature spectrum. The “W” stands for winter, referring to the cold end of the spectrum at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, while the second number is the oil’s viscosity when heated up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit, a normal engine’s operating temperature.

How often to change the oil on a 2015 Honda Pilot

Many vehicles will be able to run for over 7,000 miles on synthetic oil, but you’ll have to
change the oil
on a 2015 Honda Pilot about every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It’s important to get an oil change on time to avoid damaging your car’s internal components.
If you’re not sure how long it’s been since your last oil change, look out for telltale signs that your oil is getting old:
  • Dark/opaque oil is dirty—healthy oil is semi-transparent with a brownish or yellowish tinge.
  • Oil that feels dirty/gritty/coarse to the touch is also probably dirty and unsafe to use.
  • If your engine oil is really old, it might cause your car to produce
    unusual engine sounds
    and/or smells.
  • If you’ve noticed an overall decline in your Honda Pilot’s engine performance, it’s likely you’re due for an oil change.

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you are indeed ready for an oil change and want to try doing it yourself, you have Jerry’s blessing! But make sure that you have the proper material on hand needed to do it safely and correctly. Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement oil filter
  • The correct amount of the correct type of oil
  • A funnel
  • Rags (for the mess)
Once all your equipment is ready, the first thing you’ll want to do is start your engine. Run your engine for about five minutes to warm up the oil, which allows for faster draining. Then, turn it off again before moving on to the following steps:
  • Open up the hood and remove the oil fill cap, keeping it on hand.
  • Get underneath the engine and place the drain pan under the oil drain in such a way that it will catch the draining oil.
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer with the socket wrench. The oil’s going to start draining right away, and it could get messy!
  • Adjust the oil pan’s position, so that it’s always catching the draining oil.
  • As the draining starts to slow, unscrew and remove the old oil filter, replacing it with the new one.
  • After all of the old oil has drained, reattach the oil drain bolt using a new washer. The bolt should be tightened to 29 lb-ft.
  • Now, just fill up your engine with 4.5 quarts of new 0W-20 oil. This will be easiest using a funnel. Once you’re done, close the oil fill cap.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Now there are a couple of last steps. First of all, check your oil level to make sure it’s sitting in the sweet spot, and ensure nothing is leaking. Also, check to make sure that the
oil pressure light
goes off on your dash.
Pro Tip Pour old oil into sealable containers to be recycled. NEVER dump it down the drain, don’t pour it in the bushes, and never put old oil in the garbage. You are dealing with hazardous waste.
