Changing your oil yourself is a great way to save money on labor costs, taking the price of an oil change down from over $100 to under $30. The first thing you need to know though is how much oil to buy and what type of oil is best.

2014 Toyota Sienna engine oil capacity

First things first, the 2014 Toyota Sienna needs 6.4 qt or 6.1 L of oil when you
change the oil
and the filter. It is recommended to replace the oil filter with every oil change, but if you decide not to, the oil capacity is about 0.4 qt less.
Every trim level of the 2014 Sienna has the same engine size–a 3.5-liter V6, so every trim has the same oil capacity.
If you don’t know much about engine sizes, oil capacities, and the like, it is important to make sure you don’t confuse the engine displacement with the oil capacity. When we refer to the Sienna’s 3.5-liter engine, this is the engine displacement and the size of the engine. Keep in mind that the displacement is not interchangeable with the oil capacity of that engine.

What kind of oil does a 2014 Toyota Sienna need?

Now that you know your 2014 Toyota Sienna’s oil capacity, let’s chat oil type. Toyota recommends using 0W-20 motor oil. Of course, the owner’s manual recommends using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil, though any equivalent 0W-20 oil will work. Toyota doesn’t specify a need to use synthetic motor oil, but it is generally accepted that synthetic oil is the better choice for the health of your engine.
For those that don’t know what 0W-20 means, it is a notation for the oil’s viscosity. The “0W” tells you that the oil has a low viscosity in cold conditions (measured at 0°F), meaning your car will start better at cold temperatures compared to if you chose a higher viscosity oil. The “20” tells you the viscosity at normal operating temperatures of 212°F.
The numbers refer to the way the oil behaves at that temperature. In this case, it tells you that it behaves like a 0-weight oil at low temperatures and like a 20-weight oil at high temperatures, even though oil becomes less viscous as temperatures increase.
Generally speaking, it's best to stick with the owner manuals recommendation to use
Toyota Genuine Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil.
However, another brand of SAE 0W-20 motor oil is also acceptable as long as it meets the same quality standards.

How often to change the oil on a 2014 Toyota Sienna

Toyota doesn’t specify a recommended change interval in its owner’s manual. However, if you’re using synthetic motor oil, experts recommend changing your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. If you don’t drive a lot, then it is also recommended to change your oil roughly every six months.
However, 7,500 to 10,000 is a pretty big range, and you may need to change your oil sooner. Making an oil change part of your
basic maintenance schedule
can help keep your engine running at peak efficiency. Regularly check your oil—every month you should take a look at your dipstick and keep an eye (and ear) out for these signs that it’s time for an oil change:
  • Dark brown or black oil. Clean oil should be a transparent amber or light brown
  • Oil feels coarse or gritty
  • Strange noises coming from your engine
  • Unfamiliar smells especially the
smell of burning, oil, or smoke
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance, like reduced power or fuel efficiency.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’ve figured out you need an oil change, you can take your car into a shop or you can gather your materials and do it yourself. Oil changes are relatively straightforward, and if you have the tools, it can make for a nice DIY project even for those of us that aren’t super handy.
You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, a replacement filter, and at least 6.4 qt of synthetic 0W-20 motor oil. Before you remove any caps or bolts, run the engine for a few minutes to get it up to normal operating temperatures. This will help the oil flow more smoothly. Then, follow these steps:
  • Pop the hood and remove the oil fill cap
  • Go under the car, position the drain pan, and remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • While the oil is draining you can remove the old oil filter
  • Let the oil drain completely into the pan
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft of torque
  • Refill the engine with clean oil and replace the oil fill cap
  • Check the fill level using your dipstick
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’re done, run the engine for a few minutes and look out for any leaks. Make sure you dispose of the old oil responsibly by putting it into a sealed container and taking it to your local recycling center.
