2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum engine oil capacity

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that has an oil capacity of 5.1 quarts or 4.8 liters
Keep in mind that this is the oil capacity when also changing the oil filter, which is recommended with each service. If you change your oil without replacing the filter, you may have to subtract about 0.25 qt or 0.3 L to account for the oil and residue trapped in the filter.
Also, make sure you don’t confuse the oil capacity with the engine displacement. Engine displacement is the total volume swept by the engine’s pistons. So when we refer to a 3.5-liter engine, that tells you that the engine has a displacement of 3.5 liters. Oil capacity is different, and tells you how much lubricant is needed to keep the engine running smoothly.

What kind of oil does a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum need?

Now that you know how much oil to buy for your
Nissan
, let’s go over which oil you should choose. Not every engine uses the same manufacturer-recommended oil. For the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum, Nissan recommended an SAE 5W-30 synthetic motor oil
Let’s break down what that means. SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, which sets the classification standards. The “5W-30” is the viscosity classification. The numbers refer to the viscosity, or how the oil behaves at different temperatures. The number “5W” tells you that the oil is relatively thin in winter conditions (the W stands for winter). The “30” tells you the viscosity in normal operating conditions of 212°F. Finally, the presence of two numbers indicates that this is a multi-grade oil, meaning it is suitable for a wide range of temperatures.

How often to change oil on a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum

The actual frequency with which you will need to change your oil will depend on how you drive and the conditions you drive in. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
One of the nice things about using synthetic oil, though, is that you can usually extend this change interval quite a bit. It is common to get 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes when using synthetic oil.
The best answer for how often you need to change your oil is actually just to change it when it needs to be changed. If you check your oil regularly you can usually see signs that it is time for an oil change. We recommend checking your oil every month. If you notice any of these signs then it’s time to replace your oil:
  • Dark brown or black oil needs changing. Clean oil is light brown or amber and transparent.
  • Oil feels coarse or gritty
  • Strange noises coming from your engine
  • New smells of oil, burning, or smoke
  • Noticeable changes in your vehicle's performance

How to change your oil

Now that you know your 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum oil capacity and recommended oil type, it's time to change your oil. Changing your oil yourself is a great way to save some money, and is pretty straightforward with the right tools. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, a replacement filter, and 5.1 qt of 5W-30 synthetic engine oil.
Before you pop the hood and start draining any oil, start your can and let it run for a few minutes until it gets up to temperature. Once there, turn off the engine and follow these steps:
  • Locate and remove the oil fill cap
  • Under the engine, locate and remove the oil drain bolt and washer
  • Drain the oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old filter, and let the oil finish draining
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten to 22-29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with the new oil
  • Use the dipstick to check that you added the correct amount of oil
  • Replace the fill cap
  • Run the engine for a few minutes and check to make sure there are no leaks
After
changing your oil
, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’re done, make sure to dispose of the old oil responsibly by putting it in a sealed container and taking it to your local recycling center.
