How to change your oil and oil filter
When you’ve decided it’s time for your truck’s oil change, it’s time to gather some supplies. Those will include:
- A socket wrench
- An oil filter wrench
- Funnel
- Drain pan
- Fresh engine oil
- New oil filter
- New washer for your drain bolt
- Towel(s) for cleanup
Once you have everything you need on hand, let your engine run for just a few minutes, then turn it off—this will heat up your engine oil, making it easier to drain. Then, here’s how you can proceed:
- Remove the oil fill cap
- Underneath the vehicle, remove the oil drain bolt and washer and allow the engine oil to empty into the drain pan
- Remove the old oil filter and replace it with the new one
- Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer
- Refill the engine with your new oil to the proper fill level
- Replace the oil fill cap
Once you’ve made it this far, you can let your engine run for a few minutes again and check around for any leaks, then turn it off. Once the engine cools, you can check your oil level again, topping it off if you need to.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
