2013 Honda Pilot engine oil capacity

To avoid under- or over-filling your 2013 Honda Pilot’s oil reservoir, you’ll need to know your engine’s oil capacity. The 2013 Honda Pilot’s 3.5 L V6 engine has a total oil capacity of 4.2 quarts, which amounts to roughly 4 liters.
This number is not the same as your engine’s displacement, or the 3.5-liter space the engine’s cylinders occupy. Be sure not to confuse the two—they are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does the 2013 Honda Pilot need?

A 2013 Honda Pilot takes full synthetic motor oil with a 0W-20 rating. The owner's manual recommendation is Honda Pilot Engine Oil Genuine 44269ph SAE 0W-20—but if those numbers don’t mean much to you, keep reading.
The number before the “W”—in this case, a “0”—refers to the oil’s winter rating, or what the consistency of the oil is like when temperatures are very low. A lower number means a lower viscosity, which tells us that this oil will still flow easily even during freezing temperatures.
The other number, the “20,” tells us what the oil’s viscosity is like when the engine reaches normal operating temperatures of 212°F or higher. Any oil rated as “20” will still be thin when heated to such high temps.

How often to change the oil on a 2013 Honda Pilot

Despite the 2013 Honda Pilot's use of full synthetic motor oil, you should change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or roughly twice a year. Doing so will guarantee that your engine is properly lubricated and will help prevent your car from overheating.
You should still get into the habit, however, of checking your oil one to two times a month to avoid potentially damaging your engine—be on the lookout for these signs, as they indicate an oil change is needed sooner rather than later:
  • The oil starts to feel grainy or takes on a gritty texture
  • Your oil’s color changes from mild amber to a black or dark brown
  • Vehicle performance noticeably decreases
  • A smoky, burning, or oily smell comes from the engine
  • The engine starts making unusual noises

How to change your oil and oil filter

Before you can successfully replace your oil and oil filter yourself, you’ll need to gather the following tools: a filter wrench, socket wrench, and an oil drain pan. You’ll need to purchase five quarts of synthetic 0W-20 motor oil and a new filter, as well.
Once you’ve got your tools ready, start up your vehicle and allow it to run for a few minutes—4-5 minutes should be enough—until the engine reaches normal operating temperatures.
Once the engine has warmed up, switch it off, pop the hood, and do the following:
  1. Locate your vehicle’s oil reservoir and unscrew the oil cap.
  2. Find the reservoir’s drain hole and position the drain pan underneath it. Take the socket wrench and remove the drain bolt and corresponding washer.
  3. Allow the oil to drain into the oil drain pan below.
  4. While waiting for the oil to finish draining, use the filter wrench to remove the old oil filter.
  5. Install a new filter.
  6. When the oil finishes draining, reinstall the drain bolt and thread a new washer into place. Check your owner’s manual for tightening recommendations.
  7. Refill your engine with the necessary amount of oil and replace the oil cap.
After the new oil is added, use a dipstick to verify that the oil reaches the max fill line. If you find that enough oil was added, turn your vehicle on and allow it to run for a few minutes. After the engine comes up to temperature, check for leaks
