2013 Ford Edge 3.5 engine oil capacity

First things first: how much oil does your 2013 Ford Edge 3.5 need?
Your Ford Edge’s 3.5L engine has an oil capacity of 6 quarts (or nearly 5.7 liters).
Make sure don’t mistake your engine’s displacement, the 3.5 liters of volume its cylinders take up, with the oil capacity, which is 6 quarts. The two numbers refer to completely different things, and they aren’t interchangeable!

What kind of oil does a 2013 Ford Edge 3.5L need?

Now that you know you need 6 quarts of oil for your Edge, you’ll also need to pick the right type of oil. You’ll want to look for a premium grade SAE 5W-30 engine oil
This is what Ford recommends for the Edge 3.5L, and it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to keep your vehicle in good shape.
While Ford doesn’t specify if you should get conventional or synthetic motor oil, there are some distinct advantages to using a synthetic or synthetic blend oil in your Edge.
For one thing, synthetic oils last much longer between oil changes without getting dirty or gunking up your engine. And they usually contain additives that keep your engine cleaner and improve performance.
While conventional oil is cheaper, you’ll have to get oil changes more frequently as conventional oil gets dirtier much faster than synthetic.

How often to change oil on a 2013 Ford Edge 3.5L

Ford recommends you change the oil in your Ford Edge 3.5L every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. However, that’s only if you’ve been using a high-quality synthetic oil, which can last up to 10,000 miles (although it’s better to change the oil sooner rather than later).
If you’ve previously used conventional oil, you’ll have to get your oil changed much sooner, as conventional oils will only last between 3,000 and 5,000 miles.
The best way to make sure your oil is still clean (and you still have a full reservoir) is to check your oil levels regularly with your dipstick. You’ll also want to watch out for any of the signs that you’re due for an oil change:
  • Oil that’s a dark brown or black color—clean oil is very light brown or amber
  • Oil feels coarse or gritty if you rub it between your fingers
  • Your vehicle is putting off any weird smells, especially like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Any changes to your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When your Ford Edge 3.5L is ready for an oil change, you’ll want to gather tools for the job.
Besides 6 quarts of new engine oil and a replacement filter, you’ll need a filter wrench, socket wrench, and a drain pan.
You’ll want to start by running the engine for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. This will help the old oil drain faster from the reservoir.
When your engine is warm, shut it off and open the hood. Then follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Position the drain pan under the vehicle and remove the oil drain bolt
  • While the old oil is draining, remove the oil filter
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt
  • Refill the engine with new oil and replace the fill cap
You can use the dipstick to make sure your reservoir is completely full. You’ll also want to run the vehicle for a few minutes to check for leaks and make sure the oil pressure light turns off.
When you’re cleaning up, make sure you pour the old engine oil into a sealed container and take it to a recycling facility. Never dump old oil on the ground or throw it in the garbage!
