So, putting it all together, “5W” tells us this oil has a low viscosity at 0°F, while “40” means it’s also decent for temperatures as high as 212°F.
If you can’t find Castrol EDGE Engine Oil Full Synthetic 5W-40, the top-recommended oil by the Audi manual, you can also use SAE 5W-30 or 0W-40 motor oil as long as it meets the Audi oil quality standard specifications.
How often to change oil on a 2013 Audi A4
Now that we know which oil type to buy, it’s time to change your oil– if you’re due for an oil change, that is.
So, how often should you change the oil in your 2013 Audi A4? The recommendation is to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, changing your oil every 6 months may be a better benchmark if you don't drive often, since oil will degrade with time no matter how often you drive.

Once you’ve decided it’s time to change your oil, you’ll need a few materials. Grab a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter from your local auto parts store. And of course, you’ll need 4.9 quarts of full-synthetic 5W-40 oil to replace your old oil.
Your first step is to run your engine for a bit to warm it up. In normal temperatures, it should only take a few minutes to get your engine up to operating speed. Once you’re there, shut off your engine, open the hood, and follow these steps to change your oil:
- Remove the oil fill cap
- Get under the engine and take off the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old oil to drain into the drain pan
- Install the new filter
- Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
- Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the cap
Once done, let your engine run for a few minutes to check for any leaks. If you’ve done everything correctly, you should see the

turn off on your dashboard. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
The last step is cleaning up. It’s crucial that you don’t dump the old oil in the garbage or on the ground. Make sure to seal it in a tight container and bring it to your local recycling center to dispose of it.
