Before you begin, make sure you warm up your engine for a few minutes to reach a normal operating temperature. Then, turn your Sonata back off and follow these steps:

Open the hood and remove the oil cap

Put the drain pan beneath the engine and detach the oil drain bolt and washer so the old oil will drain out

Take out the old oil filter and allow the old oil to continue draining

When the old oil is completely drained, install the new filter

Take out the oil drain plug and replace it with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft

Pour new oil into the engine, and use your dipstick to ensure there’s enough

Tighten the oil cap, turn your engine back on, and keep an eye out for leaks

After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
