A 2008 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7L V8 engine requires 7.4 quarts of oil for proper lubrication and optimum performance.
By replacing your 2008 Toyota Tundra’s standard 236-hp 4.0L V6 engine with the optional 381-hp 5.7L V8, you get over a 50% increase in horsepower. However, those extra horses require more engine oil to run like stallions.
So to ensure you’re getting the most out of your trusty truck, here’s everything you need to know about the 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L engine oil capacity. We’ll even share some tips on what oil to use and how to save money by changing your oil at home—let’s get to work!

2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L engine oil capacity

The engine oil capacity for a 2008 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7L V8 engine is 7.4 quarts.
This is quite a bit more oil than the 5.5 quarts needed for the 4.0L V6 engine and the 6.6 quarts for the 4.7L V8—which makes sense. Since the 5.7L V8 is the largest engine available to the 2008 Toyota Tundra, it needs more oil to properly lubricate all the cylinders and the rest of the mechanical components.
And while we are on the topic, we should clarify that engine displacement is different than engine oil capacity. The number in front of the engine type is the
engine displacement
, which measures the volume of the cylinders in liters. The engine oil capacity is the amount of oil in quarts that your engine requires per oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L  need?

Toyota recommends SAE 5W−20 or 0W−20 for the 2008 Tundra 5.7L V8 engine.
But what the heck do those numbers and letters even mean? They refer to your oil’s viscosity grade, which measures how thin it will be at a range of temperatures.
The front number represents the viscosity grade when the oil is 0°F, and the second at 212°F. The “W” stands for winter, indicating that the oil will perform well in cold weather conditions. Finally, SAE simply stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, which is the certified entity that grades oil viscosity.
So for further explanation, both of these oils remain thin at a wide range of temperatures—which is a good thing! Low-viscosity oil runs smoother and stays clean longer, which reduces wear and tear on your engine. So make sure you have the correct oil so your 2008 Toyota Tundra can keep on truckin’ for years to come!
Toyota recommends using “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” for your oil changes, but any oil (conventional or synthetic) of equivalent viscosity grade should work. Of course, you can always seek confirmation with your Toyota dealership or local auto parts store before you buy your oil.
And one last note: if your 2008 Tundra has either the 4.0L V6 or the 4.7L V8 engine, Toyota recommends using SAE 5W−30 oil instead. Don’t forget to check their unique engine oil capacities!

How often to change the oil on a 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L

For optimal performance and increased longevity, here is the recommended oil change schedule for the 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L:
  • Every 7,500 to 10,000 miles if using synthetic oil
  • Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if using conventional motor oil
Engine oil is the essential lubrication your 2008 Toyota Tundra’s engine needs for all its moving parts to function smoothly. Since your truck is over 15 years old, its aging powertrain may be more susceptible to severe problems
if you don’t get an oil change
.
We recommend checking your oil once a month, regardless of where you’re at in your car maintenance schedule. For reference, clean oil is a golden amber color. However, once you approach the mentioned mileage markers, your oil will most likely have turned to a dark brown color. This indicates it’s time for an oil change.
Other, more serious indicators of bad/old oil may include strange smells, smoke, odd noises, performance deviations, and your
oil pressure light
turning on. You’ll want to check your oil immediately if you notice any of these.

How to change your oil and oil filter

You can save $25 to $75 per oil change by learning how to perform the service yourself. And with 10.4 inches of ground clearance, you probably won’t even need a car jack—this makes a pretty simple process even easier! So let’s get into it, here’s how to
change the oil and filter
on your 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7L:
  • Purchase materials: A socket wrench, a drain pan, a replacement filter, and 7.4 quarts of oil.
  • Prepare your 2008 Toyota Tundra: Start your truck’s engine and let it run (while parked) until it reaches operating temperature. Then, you can turn off the engine and open up the hood.
  • Remove old oil and filter: Remove the oil fill cap first. Then, remove the drain bolt from underneath the engine, allowing the old oil to drain into the pan below. Next, remove the oil filter and wait for the remaining oil to finish dripping out.
  • Instal new oil and filter: Install the fresh oil filter and reinsert the drain bolt. Refill the engine with the new oil and replace the fill cap.
  • Test: Run your engine for about a minute to let the oil settle into the engine and filter. Use your dipstick to ensure you have proper oil levels. You can top it off with extra oil as needed. And before you turn off the engine, check underneath your truck for any leaks.
  • Disposal: Don’t just pour the old oil in the trash. Take it to a local recycling center for proper disposal.
