2007 Volvo S80 3.2 engine oil capacity

Just how much oil does a 2007 Volvo S80 3.2 actually need for a full
oil change
? According to the owner’s manual, your oil tank needs a whopping 7.3 liters of motor oil.
Just be sure to never mix up your oil capacity—the amount of oil you need in your engine—with your engine’s displacement—the amount of space its cylinders take up. These two figures are not interchangeable, and mixing them up could result in filling your tank with a harmful amount of oil (either too much or too little).

What kind of oil does a 2007 Volvo S80 3.2 need?

So, now that you know the oil capacity, you can go buy any old container of motor oil, right? Think again! Every engine is different, and each requires a specific type of oil. Using the wrong type of motor oil in your engine can severely damage your car—so don’t do it!
Volvo recommends using 5W-30 motor oil for your 2007 S80 3.2. If you’re wondering what all those numbers mean, we’ve got you covered. Oil grades tell us all about viscosity, the thickness of motor oil at different temperatures.
The “W” in the oil grade stands for “winter,” and the number 5 before it means that the oil has a relatively low viscosity at 0°F. The number 30 represents its viscosity at 212°F, which is the typical operating temperature of an engine.
The long and short of it? This oil will do well in all temperatures, which means less wear and tear on your engine.
If you’ve started to shop for engine oils, you might notice that you have the choice between synthetic and conventional motor oil. As long as your synthetic motor oil meets the same viscosity requirements, Volvo says you’re good to go! Synthetic oil is generally a bit pricier than conventional oil, but it puts even less wear and tear on your engine and doesn’t require changes as frequently.

How often to change the oil on a 2007 Volvo S80 3.2

Volvo recommends changing the oil in your 2007 S80 3.2 every 7,500 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. That comes out to about once every 9 months, give or take. We recommend setting a calendar reminder in case your mileage is low so that you get it changed at least once a year.
But your 2007 S80 3.2 is 15 years old. That means it’s probably seen a lot of life, and its engine has done some work. You might find that your engine oil needs to be changed more often than every 7,500 miles. But how would you know?
Here are signs that your oil might need changing:
  • Motor oil is thick and brown (like a cup of muddy coffee) rather than light amber (like a cup of tea)
  • Motor oil is gritty or grainy
  • Your engine starts making unfamiliar noises
  • Your fuel efficiency goes down without explanation
  • You notice new smells coming from your engine—especially the smell of oil, smoke, or burning

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you’ve determined that it’s time to change your oil, let’s get to it! First, gather your materials: you’ll need a socket wrench, drain pan, and a filter wrench. You’ll also need a replacement filter and washer for your drain bolt. And of course, you’ll need 10 quarts of premium SAE 5W-30 motor oil (motor oil is typically sold in 5-quart containers).
Once you’ve got your materials ready, throw on an outfit that can get dirty (beware of oil stains!), and start your car. You want it to reach the normal operating temperature, with the needle on your temperature gauge about halfway between “HOT” and “COLD.” This should take about five minutes in mild weather, and the actual
oil change shouldn't take long
at all.
Then, turn your engine off and follow these steps:
  • Open up your hood and locate the oil tank
  • Unscrew the oil fill cap
  • Go beneath your engine and place the oil drain pan under your oil tank
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer and let the oil drain into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter with the filter wrench and let the rest of the oil drain
  • Install the new oil filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer
  • Refill the engine with 8.1 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil
You’re almost done! Now you just need to use your dipstick to verify your oil levels and run your engine for a few minutes to watch for leaks. If everything looks good, you’re ready to clean up!
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Remember when you’re cleaning up that you should never dump oil down the drain or into your garbage bin. Put it in a sealed container and take it to your local motor oil recycling station.
