2007 BMW 530i engine oil capacity

One of the first steps in completing an
oil change
on your own is to figure out how much oil your engine needs. The 2007 BMW 530i has a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that has an engine oil capacity of 6.9 quarts or 6.6 liters
Be careful with the two different liter values here because they can’t be interchanged! For clarity, the 3.0-liter engine means the engine’s cylinders occupy a volume of 3.0 liters—this is called the engine’s displacement. The engine oil capacity of 6.6 liters, or 6.9 quarts, tells us the amount of oil the engine will need and is the value you should focus on for our purposes here.

What kind of oil does a 2007 BMW 530i need?

Now that we have the amount of oil covered and we can go over the kind of oil your 530i needs. Your vehicle’s engine was designed to work with oil that meets certain standards, so you won’t be able to put just any ol’ oil under the hood.
When you’re at your local auto shop or browsing your online store of choice, be sure to get the BMW recommended oil grade—5W-30. The oil grade tells us about the oil’s viscosity at different temperatures. 5W-30 oil will have a low viscosity (5) at the engine’s cold start temperature (W, standing for “winter”), and a slightly higher viscosity (20) at the engine’s normal operating temperature that usually lands around a piping hot 212°F.
BMW also recommends using synthetic motor oil in your engine rather than conventional oil. Synthetic oil comes with a host of benefits like longer oil change intervals, less wear on your engine, and stronger resistance to oil breakdown. However, you can still use conventional oil as long as it meets the same oil grade standards.

How often to change oil on a 2007 BMW 530i

You now have the amount and the type of oil your BMW 530i needs—is it finally time to get to the oil change? Maybe!
BMW recommends you change the oil in your 2007 530i every 15,000 miles when using synthetic oil. If you opt for conventional oil, you’ll want to stick closer to every 3,000 to 5,000 miles per a standard
car maintenance schedule
. These are just relative estimates, though, so you’ll also want to factor in your driving environment and habits to get a better idea of your ideal oil change timeline.
Drivers who brave long daily commutes or frequent mountainous terrain will likely want to change their oil more often. Drivers that only take their cars out once in a while can go a bit longer between oil changes. In any case, you should be checking on the state of your vehicle’s oil about once a month to ensure it’s still in clean and working order.
Here are some signs of poor oil quality to keep your senses out for:
  • Darkened color. Contaminated oil will take on a dark brown or black color. Clean oil will be amber or light brown.
  • Grittiness or sludge. Motor oil should have the texture of smooth syrup.
  • Unfamiliar engine noises.
  • Smoky or burned smell. This can be the result of either contaminated oil or low oil levels.
  • Decreasing vehicle performance. Take note of your fuel economy and acceleration ability.

How to change your oil and oil filter

If it smells like something is burning or you’ve otherwise deduced that it’s time for an oil change, round up these materials:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • New oil filter
  • 6.9 quarts of synthetic 5W-30
After gathering your tools, spend some time warming up your car’s engine. You’ll want to get it up to its normal operating temperature before you begin the oil change, so idle the engine for 10 to 20 minutes or drive around the block a few times. Then, cut the engine while your vehicle is on a level surface, pop the hood open, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Take the drain pan and filter wrench under the engine with you to remove the oil drain bolt and allow the old oil to begin draining into the drain pan
  • Take out the old oil filter
  • Let the old oil drain completely and then install the new oil filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt and wipe away excess oil
  • Pour 6.9 quarts of 5W-30 into your engine and replace the oil fill cap
Take your oil dipstick out to check the level and color of your new oil, then turn your engine on for a few minutes and peer around for any leaks. If all looks dry, you’re done! Just pour the contaminated oil into a sealable container that you can drop off at your local recycling center. It’s crucial that you do not dump any oil on the ground or into your trash
