2006 Ford F-150 engine oil capacity

During an oil change, you can’t just dump a full bottle of motor oil into your engine and call it a day. Your 2006 Ford F-150 requires 6 quarts (or 5.7 liters) of engine oil during a routine oil change: no more, no less.
That’s how much you’ll need to pour into your engine once you flush out the old oil.

What kind of oil does a 2006 Ford F-150 need?

It gets even more specific than just how much oil you need. You not only need to know how much oil to buy but also that you’re buying the right kind.
That’s right, even if they look and smell the same, not all motor oils are formulated to work in every engine. For the 2006 Ford F-150, you will need to purchase SAE 5W-20 motor oil.
Note that you should avoid supplemental engine oil additives, engine cleaners, or other do-it-yourself engine treatments for your Ford. You may want to consult your owner's manual to figure out whether synthetic or conventional oil is better for your car.
If that oil type looks like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to you, allow us to translate. SAE stands for “Society of Automotive Engineers,” the entity that codes and regulates different oil types.
The W stands for winter, and the 5 next to it tells us that this oil type remains thin enough to flow well even at cold start temperatures of 0°F. On the other hand, the 20 at the end implies this oil is still relatively thin at your engine’s super-hot operating temperature of 212°F.
Basically, you need an oil that strikes the balance of not being too thick in the winter or too thin in hot temperatures. For the 2006 Ford F-150, we recommend these three motor oils:

How often to change oil on a 2006 Ford F-150

To maintain and extend the life of your engine, Ford recommends that you change your 2006 Ford F-150’s oil every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. But a lot can happen in between oil changes.
Keep an eye (and ear, and nose!) out for the following signs that you need to change your oil:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (clean oil is light brown or amber)
  • Motor oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Strange new noises coming from the engine
  • Smoke, oil, or burning smells coming from the engine
  • A decrease in your vehicle performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and learn how to
change the oil
on your 2006 Ford F-150 yourself. Grab your drain pan, filter wrench, socket wrench, replacement oil filter, 6 quarts of 5W-20 motor oil, and let’s get started.
First things first, run your engine for five to ten minutes so your engine reaches its optimal internal temperature. After that, turn the engine off,
open the hood
, and complete the following steps:
  • Position your drain pan underneath the drain bolt.
  • With your socket wrench, remove the oil drain bolt and allow the old oil to drain out into the pan. Get ready because the oil will be hot.
  • With your filter wrench, remove the old oil filter and replace it with a new one by hand.
  • Replace the drain bolt and tighten it to 10 lb-ft.
  • Remove the oil fill cap and pour in 6 quarts of motor oil.
  • Replace the oil fill cap.
Now, run your engine for a couple of minutes and check for any signs of leakage. If you’ve done it all right, there should not be any leaks and the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard should turn off.
Last, but certainly not least—cleanup! You will need to pour your old oil into a sealed container and bring it to a recycling center. It’s full of harmful chemicals, so you’ll need a professional to dispose of it for you.
