1. Warm up the engine

The first thing you need to do is warm your engine to normal operating temperatures. This will only take a few minutes of the engine idling. Once the engine is ready, turn it off.

2. Secure the car

Lift your car with your jack and secure it in place with jack stands. If you have them, wheel chocks should be used to keep the vehicle from moving while you change the oil.

3. Drain the old oil

Open the hood of your car and remove the oil fill cap. Once that’s done, position your drain pan underneath your car and remove the drain bolt and washer. Allow the oil to drain for a minimum of 15 minutes.

4. Remove the filter

Remove the old filter with the oil filter wrench and empty the remaining oil into the drain pan.

5. Install the new oil filter

Clean off the area surrounding the oil filter before attaching the new one. Once that’s done, prepare the new filter by filling it with a small amount of the new oil before screwing it into place with the oil filter wrench.

Be sure to not over-tighten the oil filter because that can cause damage to the threading. Finally, replace the drain bolt and washer.

6. Put new oil in the engine

Pour the rest of the SAE 5W-30 oil (around 4.8 quarts) into the engine. Secure the fill cap in place, then start the engine. Check the drain bolt and oil filter for leaks while the engine idles for a few minutes.

7. Stop the engine and check the oil level

After the engine has been given a chance to idle and circulate the new oil, turn it off, and allow it to cool for about 3 minutes. With the dipstick, check the oil level and top it off if needed.

8. Remove the jack

Once your oil level is correct and everything is properly secured, remove the jack and chocks from your car. Be sure to check your oil level over the next few days to ensure there are no leaks.
