What does the engine code P2000 mean?

Definition: NOx trap efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
A NOx trap, also known as a nitrogen oxide adsorber, is a device that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from lean-burn and diesel engines. Located downstream of the exhaust manifold, the NOx trap converts harmful nitrogen oxides produced by the engine into simple nitrogen. When the trap isn’t operating properly, the P2000 code will appear.

How much will it cost to fix?

The cost to diagnose the P200 engine code is typically 1 hour of labor, for which most shops will charge between $75 and $150. Depending on the cause of the issue, fixing the code could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to about $1000 if the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

What can cause the P2000 engine code?

In general, the P2000 engine code indicates a malfunction of the NOx trap. Specifically, the code could be triggered by the following problems:
  • Failing NOx trap sensor or solenoid
  • Failing catalytic converter
  • Malfunctioning engine control module (ECM)
  • Wiring problems
A licensed mechanic will be able to use an advanced scan tool to observe a live data stream and narrow down the specific cause of the error code.

Common symptoms of the P2000 engine code

You probably won’t notice any difference in your car’s operation if the P2000 engine code is showing. It won’t affect the way the car drives. In most cases, the check engine light is the only sign that something’s wrong.

How serious is the P2000 engine code?

The P2000 engine code is a sign of an emissions problem. If this code is showing, your car will not be able to pass an emissions test. Getting the problem repaired quickly is imperative if your state requires emissions testing.
However, because a failure of the NOx trap won’t pose any danger to your vehicle or yourself while driving, it’s possible to continue operating the car until you’re able to get the repairs done.

Can I fix the P2000 engine code myself?

Because diagnosing the exact cause of the P2000 engine code usually requires an advanced scanner tool, it may not be possible to fix this code by yourself. If you’re confident of your auto repair skills, though, it’s worth examining the catalytic converter system carefully to see if you can identify the source of the issue.

How to replace the catalytic converter

If you decide the replace the catalytic converter yourself, here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • Identify the exact part number for a catalytic converter that fits your vehicle.
  • Disconnect the car’s battery before proceeding with any repairs.
  • Raise the car on jack stands.
  • Unscrew and remove the old catalytic converter. If it’s welded on, you may need to take it to a mechanic.
  • Install the new catalytic converter and ensure that it’s screwed on securely.
